Agni
Triṣṭubh
This opening hymn of the Sixth Maṇḍala invokes Agni as the first awakener of inspired thought (dhī) and as the wondrous Hotṛ who makes sacrifice effective. It praises Agni’s irresistible power and luminous leadership that guides people toward the divine order, and it ends by asking the “kingly” fire for abundant, many-formed riches and well-being.
Mantra 1
त्वं ह्यग्ने प्रथमो मनोतास्या धियो अभवो दस्म होता । त्वं सीं वृषन्नकृणोर्दुष्टरीतु सहो विश्वस्मै सहसे सहध्यै ॥
You indeed, O Agni, are the first creator of the thought; of this vision you became the wondrous priest of the oblation. You, O strong one, fashioned the irresistible Power—force for all, force for the force, force for the mastering.
Mantra 2
अधा होता न्यसीदो यजीयानिळस्पद इषयन्नीड्यः सन् । तं त्वा नरः प्रथमं देवयन्तो महो राये चितयन्तो अनु ग्मन् ॥
Then the priest took his seat—more and more fit for sacrifice—on the place of Ila, impelling the flow, being worthy of adoration. Him, you (Agni), the men who seek the gods followed first, desiring the vast plenitude of being and awakening it into consciousness.
Mantra 3
वृतेव यन्तं बहुभिर्वसव्यैस्त्वे रयिं जागृवांसो अनु ग्मन् । रुशन्तमग्निं दर्शतं बृहन्तं वपावन्तं विश्वहा दीदिवांसम् ॥
As to a chosen goal they follow him with many riches, waking in themselves the plenitude that is in you. They follow the shining Agni, visible and vast, bearing the radiant flame, ever blazing through all the days.
Mantra 4
पदं देवस्य नमसा व्यन्तः श्रवस्यवः श्रव आपन्नमृक्तम् । नामानि चिद्दधिरे यज्ञियानि भद्रायां ते रणयन्त संदृष्टौ ॥
By homage they have found the step of the god; seeking the glory they attained an unbroken fame. They have even set in place the sacrificial Names; in your auspicious vision they take delight and are made glad.
Mantra 5
त्वां वर्धन्ति क्षितयः पृथिव्यां त्वां राय उभयासो जनानाम् । त्वं त्राता तरणे चेत्यो भूः पिता माता सदमिन्मानुषाणाम् ॥
The peoples on earth increase you; the plenitudes of both kinds among men increase you. You become the saviour in the crossing, the one to be heeded; you are father and mother always for the human being.
Mantra 6
सपर्येण्यः स प्रियो विक्ष्वग्निर्होता मन्द्रो नि षसादा यजीयान् । तं त्वा वयं दम आ दीदिवांसमुप ज्ञुबाधो नमसा सदेम ॥
Worthy of service, beloved among the clans, Agni the priest, the gladdener, has sat down—more fit for sacrifice. To you, shining in our home, we come near with bowed knee, and by homage we would sit in your presence.
Mantra 7
तं त्वा वयं सुध्यो नव्यमग्ने सुम्नायव ईमहे देवयन्तः । त्वं विशो अनयो दीद्यानो दिवो अग्ने बृहता रोचनेन ॥
You, that new and right-guiding one, we desire, O Agni, seeking your grace and seeking the gods. You lead the peoples, blazing, O Agni, by the vast luminous world of heaven.
Mantra 8
विशां कविं विश्पतिं शश्वतीनां नितोशनं वृषभं चर्षणीनाम् । प्रेतीषणिमिषयन्तं पावकं राजन्तमग्निं यजतं रयीणाम् ॥
Agni—the seer of the peoples, the lord of the enduring clans, the strong increaser, the bull of the human races—pressing forward the impulsion, urging the movement, purified and radiant; the adorable kingly Fire of the plenitudes.
Mantra 9
सो अग्न ईजे शशमे च मर्तो यस्त आनट् समिधा हव्यदातिम् । य आहुतिं परि वेदा नमोभिर्विश्वेत्स वामा दधते त्वोतः ॥
That mortal worships and comes to right quietude who reaches your gift of the offering by the kindling. He who knows the oblation all around with acts of homage—he indeed holds all desirable plenitudes, protected by you.
Mantra 10
अस्मा उ ते महि महे विधेम नमोभिरग्ने समिधोत हव्यैः । वेदी सूनो सहसो गीर्भिरुक्थैरा ते भद्रायां सुमतौ यतेम ॥
To you, O Agni, for the vast Greatness, we would offer our shaping worship with acts of reverence—by kindling and by oblations. O Son of Force, we would build the altar for you with inspired words and hymns; may we move toward you and arrive in your auspicious, luminous right-mindedness.
Mantra 11
आ यस्ततन्थ रोदसी वि भासा श्रवोभिश्च श्रवस्यस्तरुत्रः । बृहद्भिर्वाजैः स्थविरेभिरस्मे रेवद्भिरग्ने वितरं वि भाहि ॥
O Agni, you who have stretched out the two worlds with your shining, and with your powers of fame make us ever more worthy of luminous hearing—shine out for us more widely, with great and firm vāja-forces, with riches that are full of light.
Mantra 12
नृवद्वसो सदमिद्धेह्यस्मे भूरि तोकाय तनयाय पश्वः । पूर्वीरिषो बृहतीरारेअघा अस्मे भद्रा सौश्रवसानि सन्तु ॥
O lord of riches, establish in us continually a man-strengthening abundance—plenty for our inner child and for our growing powers and energies. Let the primal streams of impulsion, vast and far from harm, be ours; in us let there be auspicious gains of luminous hearing and good report.
Mantra 13
पुरूण्यग्ने पुरुधा त्वाया वसूनि राजन्वसुता ते अश्याम् । पुरूणि हि त्वे पुरुवार सन्त्यग्ने वसु विधते राजनि त्वे ॥
O Agni, in many ways, through you may we attain many riches; O King, may we reach your very state of richness. For many indeed are the wide-giving treasures in you, O Agni—O Wealth itself—belonging to the worshipper, in you the King.
It presents Agni as the fire that awakens inspired understanding (dhī), carries the offering as Hotṛ, and leads people toward the divine order; it asks him for strength and abundant prosperity.
Because the hymn treats sacred fire as the power that kindles insight and right intention—making the mind fit for worship and for alignment with ṛta (cosmic truth/order).
It can be recited at the start of a homa or simple lamp/fire offering to invoke clarity, protection, and auspicious beginnings, ending with a prayer for well-being and resources used in righteous ways.
