Mantra 1

ऋतुर्जनित्री तस्या अपस्परि मक्षू जात आविशद्यासु वर्धते । तदाहना अभवत्पिप्युषी पयोंऽशोः पीयूषं प्रथमं तदुक्थ्यम् ॥

The Season, the begetting Power—around her the Waters: swiftly, once born, he entered into those in which he grows. Then she became the milch-cow, swelling with richness; the milk of the stalk, the first nectar—this is worthy of the hymn.

Mantra 2

सध्रीमा यन्ति परि बिभ्रतीः पयो विश्वप्स्न्याय प्र भरन्त भोजनम् । समानो अध्वा प्रवतामनुष्यदे यस्ताकृणोः प्रथमं सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

In harmony they move, bearing around the milk-essence; for the all-nourishing they bring forward the food of delight. One is the path along the downward slopes they follow; you who first made them so—worthy are you of the hymn.

Mantra 3

अन्वेको वदति यद्ददाति तद्रूपा मिनन्तदपा एक ईयते । विश्वा एकस्य विनुदस्तितिक्षते यस्ताकृणोः प्रथमं सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

One follows and declares what he gives; yet he alters the forms of that gift. One alone moves as the waters themselves. All the repulsions and thrusts against the One are borne and endured by him—he who first shaped those powers; he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 4

प्रजाभ्यः पुष्टिं विभजन्त आसते रयिमिव पृष्ठं प्रभवन्तमायते । असिन्वन्दंष्ट्रैः पितुरत्ति भोजनं यस्ताकृणोः प्रथमं सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

They sit distributing nourishment to the becomings, as one lays a wealth upon a supporting back that can bear and increase it. The unsated one eats with his teeth the father’s food—he who first shaped those powers; he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

अधाकृणोः पृथिवीं संदृशे दिवे यो धौतीनामहिहन्नारिणक्पथः । तं त्वा स्तोमेभिरुदभिर्न वाजिनं देवं देवा अजनन्त्सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

Then you made the Earth a counterpart in vision to Heaven; you, slayer of the serpent for the shining ones, opened the paths. You—like a steed of plenitude—by hymns and uplifted waters the gods brought forth as a god; he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

यो भोजनं च दयसे च वर्धनमार्द्रादा शुष्कं मधुमद्दुदोहिथ । स शेवधिं नि दधिषे विवस्वति विश्वस्यैक ईशिषे सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

You give both the food and the increase; from the moist you milk out the dry as honeyed. You set the treasure within the radiant one; you alone rule over all—he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 7

यः पुष्पिणीश्च प्रस्वश्च धर्मणाधि दाने व्यवनीरधारयः । यश्चासमा अजनो दिद्युतो दिव उरुरूर्वाँ अभितः सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

You upheld the blossoming and the forward-breeding powers by the law, by the giving, and you spread out the worlds. And you brought into being the unequalled lightnings of heaven, wide on every side—he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 8

यो नार्मरं सहवसुं निहन्तवे पृक्षाय च दासवेशाय चावहः । ऊर्जयन्त्या अपरिविष्टमास्यमुतैवाद्य पुरुकृत्सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

You brought (help) to strike down Narmara, the one rich in force, for Pṛkṣa and for Dāsa-veśa. From the strengthening power you brought an unblocked mouth—yes, even today you are the doer of many acts; he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 9

शतं वा यस्य दश साकमाद्य एकस्य श्रुष्टौ यद्ध चोदमाविथ । अरज्जौ दस्यून्त्समुनब्दभीतये सुप्राव्यो अभवः सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

A hundred—or ten together—when, at the call of a single one, you came with the impulse. On the battle-line you bound the Dasyus together for their confounding; you became a perfect protector—he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 10

विश्वेदनु रोधना अस्य पौंस्यं ददुरस्मै दधिरे कृत्नवे धनम् । षळस्तभ्ना विष्टिरः पञ्च संदृशः परि परो अभवः सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

All the boundaries followed his manhood and gave to him; they placed wealth for the accomplisher. You fixed the six expanses, the five correspondences; you became the one beyond the beyond—he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

Mantra 11

सुप्रवाचनं तव वीर वीर्यं यदेकेन क्रतुना विन्दसे वसु । जातूष्ठिरस्य प्र वयः सहस्वतो या चकर्थ सेन्द्र विश्वास्युक्थ्यः ॥

Well-worthy to be spoken is your hero-power, O hero, since by a single will you find the riches. You drive forward the strength of the ever-stable, the forceful; what you have done—O Indra—you are hymn-worthy in all.

Mantra 12

अरमयः सरपसस्तराय कं तुर्वीतये च वय्याय च स्रुतिम् । नीचा सन्तमुदनयः परावृजं प्रान्धं श्रोणं श्रवयन्त्सास्युक्थ्यः ॥

You made ready the swift ones for Tārā, for Kaṃ, for Turvīti and for Vayya, and you set the course. The one sunk low you led upward, the one turned away you brought forward; you made the blind and the lame to hear—he indeed is the true subject of the hymn.

अस्मभ्यं तद्वसो दानाय राधः समर्थयस्व बहु ते वसव्यम् । इन्द्र यच्चित्रं श्रवस्या अनु द्यून्बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

For us, O Vasu (Indra), set in right order that power of giving, that plenitude of delight; abundant is thy wealth of luminous substance. O Indra, that marvellous glory of thy fame—following it through the days—may we speak the Vast (Bṛhat) in the assemblies, made strong with heroic energies.
