This hymn is a collective wake-up call to a band of like-minded companions to kindle Agni together and set the sacrifice in motion, invoking Dawn (Uṣas) and Dadhikrāvan, with Indra as the empowering ally (indra-vat). Using vivid images of chariot-making, energizing the “horses” (vital powers), and filling troughs/vessels, it frames yajña as coordinated, skillful work that wins strength, prosperity, and victorious movement. It culminates in urging decisive labor and explicitly summoning Indra to drink Soma and grant aid.

Mantra 1

उद्बुध्यध्वं समनसः सखायः समग्निमिन्ध्वं बहवः सनीळाः । दधिक्रामग्निमुषसं च देवीमिन्द्रावतोऽवसे नि ह्वये वः ॥

Awaken, O comrades of one mind; together kindle the Fire, many of you, sharing one nest. Dadhikrāvan, Agni, and the goddess Dawn—these I call down for help, with Indra as their companion-force.

Mantra 2

मन्द्रा कृणुध्वं धिय आ तनुध्वं नावमरित्रपरणीं कृणुध्वम् । इष्कृणुध्वमायुधारं कृणुध्वं प्राञ्चं यज्ञं प्र णयता सखायः ॥

Make your thoughts glad and widen them; fashion the boat that is carried by the oar. Prepare the arrow; make ready the weapon-bearing power. Lead the sacrifice forward, straight onward, O comrades.

Mantra 3

युनक्त सीरा वि युगा तनुध्वं कृते योनौ वपतेह बीजम् । गिरा च श्रुष्टिः सभरा असन्नो नेदीय इत्सृण्यः पक्वमेयात् ॥

Yoke the ploughs; spread out the yokes. In the prepared womb sow here the seed. Let our call and our ready obedience be with burden-bearing power; then may the ripe gain come near to us swiftly.

Mantra 4

सीरा युञ्जन्ति कवयो युगा वि तन्वते पृथक् । धीरा देवेषु सुम्नया ॥

The seers yoke the ploughs; they spread the yokes apart, each in its place—steadfast in the gods, by the power of goodwill and grace.

Mantra 5

निराहावान्कृणोतन सं वरत्रा दधातन । सिञ्चामहा अवतमुद्रिणं वयं सुषेकमनुपक्षितम् ॥

Clear out the channels of the call; set the reins in harmony. We would pour the uplifted well within us—well-watered, not diminished—so the inner field of action may be made ready.

Mantra 6

इष्कृताहावमवतं सुवरत्रं सुषेचनम् । उद्रिणं सिञ्चे अक्षितम् ॥

When the invoking-channel has been rightly fashioned, the well becomes well-reined and well-watered; then pour the upraised spring—unwasting, inexhaustible—so the inner plenty stands firm.

Mantra 7

प्रीणीताश्वान्हितं जयाथ स्वस्तिवाहं रथमित्कृणुध्वम् । द्रोणाहावमवतमश्मचक्रमंसत्रकोशं सिञ्चता नृपाणम् ॥

Gladden the life-powers (the horses) and win what is set before you; shape indeed the chariot that bears well-being. Pour into the trough of the call, into the well with stone-wheels and firm-held vessel—fill the ‘man-drink’ that sustains our lordly being.

व्रजं कृणुध्वं स हि वो नृपाणो वर्म सीव्यध्वं बहुला पृथूनि । पुरः कृणुध्वमायसीरधृष्टा मा वः सुस्रोच्चमसो दृंहता तम् ॥

Make the enclosure—for that is your sustaining draught; stitch the armor, many and wide. Set up the iron defenses, unassailed; let not the cup leak away—strengthen it well.

Mantra 9

आ वो धियं यज्ञियां वर्त ऊतये देवा देवीं यजतां यज्ञियामिह । सा नो दुहीयद्यवसेव गत्वी सहस्रधारा पयसा मही गौः ॥

Turn here to us for help the thought that is fit for sacrifice, O gods—the goddess Thought, worthy of adoration. May she milk for us, as a cow going to pasture, the great streams—thousand-flowing—with the rich milk of nourishment.

Mantra 10

आ तू षिञ्च हरिमीं द्रोरुपस्थे वाशीभिस्तक्षताश्मन्मयीभिः । परि ष्वजध्वं दश कक्ष्याभिरुभे धुरौ प्रति वह्निं युनक्त ॥

Come, pour the tawny force into the lap of the wooden trough; with stone-like adzes shape it well. Embrace it round with ten girths; to both yokes bind the bearer of the fire—yoke the will to its double powers.

Mantra 11

उभे धुरौ वह्निरापिब्दमानोऽन्तर्योनेव चरति द्विजानिः । वनस्पतिं वन आस्थापयध्वं नि षू दधिध्वमखनन्त उत्सम् ॥

On both yokes the Carrier moves, drinking in, like a child within the womb, the twice-born. Set up the lord of the forest in the forest; place it firmly down—digging out the spring.

Mantra 12

कपृन्नरः कपृथमुद्दधातन चोदयत खुदत वाजसातये । निष्टिग्र्यः पुत्रमा च्यावयोतय इन्द्रं सबाध इह सोमपीतये ॥

O workers, lift up the work and set it forward; drive on, dig in, for the winning of plenitude. O Niṣṭigrya, stir your son for help—bring Indra here with his companions to drink the Soma.
