This hymn invokes the paired deities Agni and Soma as a single coordinated power of sacrifice: Agni as the carrier and kindler, Soma as the enlivening draught and inspirer. It asks them to hear the poet’s well-made praise, accept the set-out oblations, and grant the sacrificer protection, strength, joy, and a well-heard, successful rite. The tone is practical and ritual-centered—“come, enjoy, shelter us, and establish śam/yoḥ (peace and welfare) in the worshipper.”
Mantra 1
अग्नीषोमाविमं सु मे शृणुतं वृषणा हवम् । प्रति सूक्तानि हर्यतं भवतं दाशुषे मयः ॥
Agni and Soma, hear well this my call, O two puissant powers. Take delight in these well-fashioned words; become for the giver a force of gladness and inner ease.
Mantra 2
अग्नीषोमा यो अद्य वामिदं वचः सपर्यति । तस्मै धत्तं सुवीर्यं गवां पोषं स्वश्व्यम् ॥
Agni and Soma, whoever today serves you with this word, to him grant heroic force of soul; grant increase of the rays (cows) and a noble power of energies (horses).
Mantra 3
अग्नीषोमा य आहुतिं यो वां दाशाद्धविष्कृतिम् । स प्रजया सुवीर्यं विश्वमायुर्व्यश्नवत् ॥
Agni and Soma, whoever offers you the oblation, whoever gives you the rightly-shaped offering-force, he attains through the soul’s increase a heroic plenitude, and he reaches out to the whole wideness of life.
Mantra 4
अग्नीषोमा चेति तद्वीर्यं वां यदमुष्णीतमवसं पणिं गाः । अवातिरतं बृसयस्य शेषोऽविन्दतं ज्योतिरेकं बहुभ्यः ॥
Agni and Soma, your heroic power is manifest: you wrested the rays of Light from the Paṇi who denies the offering; you overthrew what was left of Bṛsaya and found the single Light for the many.
Mantra 5
युवमेतानि दिवि रोचनान्यग्निश्च सोम सक्रतू अधत्तम् । युवं सिन्धूँरभिशस्तेरवद्यादग्नीषोमावमुञ्चतं गृभीतान् ॥
You two set these shining regions in heaven—Agni and Soma, strong in will. You released the rivers held fast by the curse of the hostile word; O Agni and Soma, you freed what had been seized.
Mantra 6
आन्यं दिवो मातरिश्वा जभारामथ्नादन्यं परि श्येनो अद्रेः । अग्नीषोमा ब्रह्मणा वावृधानोरुं यज्ञाय चक्रथुरु लोकम् ॥
One (treasure) from heaven Mātariśvan brought; another the Falcon won by churning it from the Rock. O Agni and Soma, grown by the Word, you made a wide world-space for the sacrifice.
Mantra 7
अग्नीषोमा हविषः प्रस्थितस्य वीतं हर्यतं वृषणा जुषेथाम् । सुशर्माणा स्ववसा हि भूतमथा धत्तं यजमानाय शं योः ॥
Agni and Soma, come to the offering set forth; take delight in it, you two mighty ones. Become for us good shelters by your own free power; then place in the sacrificer peace and well-being.
Mantra 8
यो अग्नीषोमा हविषा सपर्याद्देवद्रीचा मनसा यो घृतेन । तस्य व्रतं रक्षतं पातमंहसो विशे जनाय महि शर्म यच्छतम् ॥
Whoever serves you, Agni and Soma, with offering, with a mind turned godward, with clarified light—guard his law of working, protect him from the falling into darkness; and to the people, to the human being, grant a great shelter.
Mantra 9
अग्नीषोमा सवेदसा सहूती वनतं गिरः । सं देवत्रा बभूवथुः ॥
Agni and Soma, one in knowledge, united in the call, accept these words; become wholly present in the godward way.
Mantra 10
अग्नीषोमावनेन वां यो वां घृतेन दाशति । तस्मै दीदयतं बृहत् ॥
Agni and Soma, for the one who offers to you with this clarified light, make shine for him the Vast—let the great illumination blaze.
Mantra 11
अग्नीषोमाविमानि नो युवं हव्या जुजोषतम् । आ यातमुप नः सचा ॥
Agni and Soma, accept these offerings of ours; come here to us and draw near in companionship.
Mantra 12
अग्नीषोमा पिपृतमर्वतो न आ प्यायन्तामुस्रिया हव्यसूदः । अस्मे बलानि मघवत्सु धत्तं कृणुतं नो अध्वरं श्रुष्टिमन्तम् ॥
Agni and Soma, fill our course forward; let the shining powers that press the offering swell within us. Place strengths in us among the givers; make our sacrifice rich in obedience and right hearing.
Agni is the fire that carries offerings to the gods, and Soma is the sacred pressed draught that gives vigor and inspiration. Invoked together, they represent the complete sacrificial power: offering and its enlivening essence working as one.
It asks Agni–Soma to hear the prayer, come to the prepared offering, accept it with delight, protect the worshipper, and grant strength, prosperity, and especially peace and well-being (śam and yoḥ).
It is most naturally used in Soma-sacrifice settings and related fire-offering sequences, when oblations are set out and the priest invites Agni and Soma to partake and bless the yajamāna with a successful rite.
