Sukta 9.33
रायः समुद्राँश्चतुरोऽस्मभ्यं सोम विश्वतः । आ पवस्व सहस्रिणः ॥
rāyáḥ samudrā́ṃś catúro ’smábhyaṃ soma viśvátāḥ | ā́ pavasva sahásriṇaḥ ||
يا سوما، من كلِّ جهةٍ طهِّرْ نفسَكَ نحونا، حاملاً أربعةَ محيطاتِ الوفرةِ الروحية—ألفَ ضعفٍ في الامتلاء.
A call to Soma Pavamāna to purify and flow to the worshippers from every direction, bringing “four oceans” of wealth, a thousandfold abundance.
The seeker invokes the purified Soma—divine Ananda/nectar of consciousness—to descend from all planes (“from every side”) into the being. The “four oceans” are the vast reservoirs of spiritual plenitude (often read as the fourfold fullness: physical/vital/mental/supramental or the four quarters of the inner world) that Soma can pour into the sādhaka when the inner sacrifice is active. “Purify yourself toward us” indicates the movement of Ananda through the clarifying filter of discernment, becoming fit to inhabit mind, life, and body.
When consciousness is clarified, delight is not scarce: it arrives from every side of life, and becomes a stable, abundant support for growth. True prosperity is the many-sided plenitude of being, not mere possession.
Prayer for abundance, Integral plenitude, Soma purification, Vastness imagery
Pavamāna Soma hymns are largely associated with seer-families preserving the ecstatic-illumined Soma-vision; many are Kāṇva and related lineages in Mandala 9.
The rishi-voice here functions as an initiator into Ananda: it teaches that delight becomes a universal influx when consciousness is purified and widened.
Cosmic delight that circulates between worlds, sustaining gods and men; purifier that makes the offering fit for the higher powers.
Ananda that clarifies the mind, widens the heart, and empowers illumination; it dissolves dryness, depression, and fragmentation by a unifying sweetness.

4 pādas of ~11 syllables
Forward-driving, expansive cadence suited to invocation and largeness (samudra imagery).
Builds a sense of wideness and incoming force; supports a receptive yet powerful aspiration for plenitude.
Concluding boon-invocation: Soma’s purified flow invited to bring abundance to sacrificers; inwardly, descent of integral plenitude from all directions of consciousness.
During Soma filtration/flow (pavamāna-stotra context; also recited as praise while Soma runs)
Chant to accompany the flowing, filtering Soma and invoke abundance for the sacrificer.
Use as a meditation mantra for calling in ‘fourfold fullness’—stability in body, harmony in life-force, clarity in mind, and wideness above mind.
rayi: ‘wealth’ as plenitude; connected to √rā ‘to give, grant’ in Vedic semantic field. samudra: ‘gathering of waters’ (sam- + udra/ud ‘water/rise’), symbol of vast integrated fullness. pavasva: from √pav/√pū ‘purify’—central to Pavamāna hymns. catur: PIE *kʷetwóres ‘four’ (cf. Latin quattuor). sahasra: ‘thousand’ (PIE *ǵheslo- debated; Indo-Iranian stable numeral).
Rayi as fullness of being, Fourfold completeness (caturaḥ), Integral reception (viśvataḥ)
Ṛta (right order) as the law by which Soma becomes ‘pavamāna’; Satya (truth) as the clear condition of delight; Tapas (inner heat) implied as the force that enables purification and influx
Purification is alignment with Ṛta; only the rightly-ordered vessel can hold the oceanic Ananda.
Soma’s clarity mirrors truth-consciousness: delight becomes stable when it is truthful, not mixed with desire.
From the unbounded ‘oceans’ the worlds are nourished; abundance descends into form through purification.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral (Aurobindonian) reading: Ananda as a fundamental plane supporting manifestation.
The ‘ocean’ is the vast subconscient/superconscient reservoir; the ‘flow’ is the descent of delight into the mind-life-body after inner clarification.
Receive the purified Ananda from ‘all sides’—practice integral receptivity without grasping.
Anāhata (heart) and Sahasrāra (crown) as primary receptacles of wideness and descending delight.
Slow inhalation imagining cool luminous nectar descending; longer exhalation to spread it through the body.
Widened, receptive, quietly ecstatic (calm joy).
Before chanting, offer a moment of sincerity (truthfulness). While chanting, feel ‘four oceans’ filling the four quarters of your being; after chanting, sit 2–3 minutes letting the sweetness stabilize.
Use Vedic accenting as per śākala: observe udatta peaks on key invocatory words (e.g., sóma, víśvataḥ), with svarita falls following; exact svara requires pada-svara notation from a Vedic text.
Keep the main lift on the deity-name ‘soma’ and the imperative ‘pavasva’; let ‘viśvataḥ’ widen the phrase.
Maintain nasalization in ‘samudrām̐ś’ (ānusvāra with nasal color), Keep ‘caturaḥ’ with clear dental ‘t’ and light ‘ḥ’, In ‘sahasriṇaḥ’, articulate ‘ṣ’ (retroflex) distinctly from ‘s’
Clear, flowing, slightly ‘liquid’ tone to mirror Soma’s stream; avoid harshness.
