Inside Sukta 85

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A vivid epiphany of the Maruts: brilliantly adorned, swift, and forceful—Rudra’s sons advancing in splendor.

  2. Development

Their collective might is unfolded: they enlarge the cosmic spaces, rejoice in assemblies, and take their station in heaven, making a wide seat for their presence.

  3. Climax

Their vastness is affirmed as they settle upon the beloved barhis; even Viṣṇu’s cosmic impulse is invoked as a supporting horizon for their motion and power.

  4. Where it settles

The poet turns from praise to prayer: may the Maruts bring their shelters and triple supports to the sacrificers and grant abundant, hero-making wealth.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are youthful, splendid, and fiercely moving storm-gods: ornamented like radiant women yet charging like swift steeds, exulting in assemblies and roaring with luminous force. They are portrayed as a coordinated host—self-powered, heaven-seated, and intimately present at the sacrificial grass.
  • Cosmic functionThey drive the storm and the life-giving rains, uphold and expand the cosmic spaces (heaven and earth), and energize divine action in concert with the wider order (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize surging vital energies—courage, breath-force, collective resolve, and the awakened dynamism that clears obstacles and strengthens the seeker’s inner ‘field’ for offering and insight.

The seer

  • Gotama RāhūgaṇaGautama gotra (Āṅgirasa lineage, traditional) · A Gotama-family seer associated with vigorous Marut praise—depicting them as radiant, self-powered hosts who widen heaven-and-earth and rush to the sacrifice.
