Sukta 9.29

Devata

Soma Pavamāna (purifying Soma)

Inside Sukta 29

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with the image of powerful Soma-streams surging forth by the might (ojas) of the pressed juice, moving in the wake of the gods.

  2. Development

Petitions expand from the cosmic/liturgical flow to human benefit: Soma is asked to win all treasures and to push away hatred, obstruction, and resistance.

  3. Climax

A concentrated request for total plenitude—earthly and heavenly rayi—together with luminous, victorious force (dyumat śuṣma).

  4. Where it settles

The sukta settles in confident invocation: Soma’s purified stream is the vehicle of wealth, protection, and spiritual empowerment as it continues to flow.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is praised as Indu—the bright drop—pressed and then purified as it streams through the filter (pavitra), rushing in shining currents and empowering gods and worshippers.
  • Cosmic functionHe is the divine elixir that invigorates the deities, sustains ṛta (cosmic order) through sacrificial exchange, and mediates vitality, abundance, and victorious force from the subtle to the manifest.
  • Inner significanceThe ‘purifying Soma’ symbolizes clarified consciousness: a mind/heart refined through discipline, where luminous energy flows unobstructed, repelling negativity and awakening strength, joy, and discernment.

The seer

  • AnuktaLike several Soma-Pavamāna hymns in Maṇḍala 9, this sukta is transmitted without a clearly preserved rishi-name, reflecting a liturgical corpus shaped by priestly Soma-ritual tradition rather than a single identifiable author.
