Inside Sukta 167

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A bold enumeration of Indra’s “thousandfold” aids—help, nourishment, joy, wealth, and powers of accomplishment—invited to approach the worshippers.

  2. Development

The hymn links divine giving to ritual efficacy: praise (arká), offering (havis), and Soma-pressing create the conditions for Indra/Marut powers to become present and effective in the assembly.

  3. Climax

The ritual moment where hymn and pressed Soma ‘sing’ and the powers are ‘set up/installed’—a vivid image of divine energy being established in the community.

  4. Where it settles

A direct offering of the stoma to the Maruts, asking for embodied vitality, wideness, and a durable, swiftly-giving strength that can be ‘found’ and relied upon.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as the tawny-steeded lord of might whose aids and provisions are “a thousand,” the victorious drinker of Soma who responds to well-made hymns and offerings. He is approached as the giver of rāyas (riches), iṣaḥ (nourishments/impulsions), and vājāḥ (victorious capacities), often acting with the Maruts’ storm-force.
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds ṛta by breaking obstacles, releasing life-supporting powers, and granting victory, rain, and expansion; with the Maruts he mobilizes the dynamic energies of the atmosphere and the battle for light.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents awakened will-power and courageous clarity that breaks inner resistance; the “thousand helps” symbolize abundant resources of resolve, inspired energy, and successful execution when aligned with truth and right offering.

The seer

  • Agastya (Agastya Mānavā, traditional attribution for RV 1.167)Mānava (Agastya tradition within the Rigvedic family collections) · A major Vedic seer celebrated for powerful Indra–Marut hymns and for embodying disciplined tapas and inspired speech that “makes the gods present” through stoma and soma.

Frequently Asked Questions

“A thousand” is a Vedic way of saying “abundant and overflowing.” The hymn emphasizes that Indra’s help, nourishment, wealth, and success-powers are not scarce but plentiful and near when properly invoked.

Indra is frequently praised together with the Maruts, his storm-allies who embody dynamic force and momentum. This hymn shows Indra’s power arriving through a shared field of energy—Maruts, Soma, and the sung hymn working together in ritual.

It aims at protection, victory, prosperity, and inner strength. By offering Soma and reciting the stoma, the worshipper asks that divine power become steady and effective in one’s life—bringing nourishment, success, and enduring resilience.
