Sukta 9.53
अस्य व्रतानि नाधृषे पवमानस्य दूढ्या । रुज यस्त्वा पृतन्यति ॥
ásya vratā́ni nā́dhṛṣe pávamānasya dūḍhyā́ | rúja yás tvā pṛtányati ||
अस्य पवमानस्य दृढानि व्रतानि कश्चन नाधृषे। यस्त्वा पृतन्यति, तं त्वं दूढ्यया शक्त्या रुज—शत्रोः प्रवृत्तिं चूर्णय।
By his unshakable force break the one who wars against thee.
Soma Pavamāna moves by vrata—fixed workings of Truth (ṛta) in consciousness. The hostile is not merely an external enemy but the pṛtanyati: the inner movement that fights the ascent—doubt, revolt, inertia, perversion of desire. The mantra calls the Truth-delight to ‘ruj’ (break) the hostile formation, especially duḥ-dhyā: the hard-to-shake, ill-willed or perverse mental formation that resists purification.
What is aligned with truth has an inherent lawfulness and resilience; when consciousness is purified, it naturally exposes and breaks falsehood and hostile patterns.
Soma-ritual, Invictory, Rita (Cosmic Order), Inner battle (knowledge vs. hostility)
The seer-voice here is juridical and forceful: it affirms the inviolability of the truth-law (vrata) and calls for decisive breaking of hostile thought—an essential step in inner purification.
Guardian of the right order in the sacrificial flow; purifier that enforces the law of ascent.
Truth-delight that makes the being coherent; a force that exposes and fractures hostile mental formations.

4 x 11 (approx.)
Authoritative, law-affirming; a clipped imperative energy in ruja.
Creates a sense of protection and inner boundary; strengthens resolve against intrusive thoughts.
Pavamāna Soma hymns used in Soma pressing/purification sequences (notably within Soma sacrifices such as Agniṣṭoma); recited as the Soma is filtered to support Indra and the gods.
While Soma is flowing/being clarified; also suitable when affirming the efficacy of the rite
Recitation to establish the ‘vrata’ of Soma and ward off hostile influences
Use as a protective affirmation during meditation when negative thought-loops or doubt arise; recite to ‘break’ the hostile formation.
Key terms: pavamāna- (present participle middle of √pū ‘purify’ → ‘the self-purifying/purifying one’, Soma as clarifying consciousness); vrata- (from √vṛ ‘to choose, will, restrain’ → ‘chosen law/ordinance’, hence stable right-working aligned with ṛta); ruja (imperative of √ruj ‘break, shatter’, used for breaking hostile formations); pṛtanyati (denominative/verb from pṛtanā ‘battle’, indicating active opposition). The phrase nādhṛṣe expresses inviolability: ‘not to be assailed/overpowered’—Soma’s ṛta-working cannot be breached.
Ṛta (inviolable right-order expressed as vratāni), inner purification (śuddhi) as a condition for truth-consciousness
Vrata is the operational face of ṛta: the law by which higher consciousness acts and cannot be annulled by lower forces.
Truth is self-protecting when purified; it rejects violation by falsehood.
Purification as enforcement of cosmic order within the individual being.
Integral/Vedāntic reading: hostile forces are psychological powers; ‘law’ is truth-structure of consciousness.
The ‘law’ is the stable rhythm of right seeing; the ‘hostile warrior’ is the intrusive, combative thought-force that disrupts concentration and ascent.
Hold the sense of an inviolable inner law (vrata) of truth; notice hostile thought-impulses and, on ‘ruja’, imagine them cracking and dissolving into light.
Ajna (discernment)
Short ‘cutting’ exhale on ruja; otherwise even nasal breathing; optionally 3 rounds of kapalabhati (gentle) before chanting if appropriate.
Clear, vigilant, protected; a ‘truth-boundary’ around the mind.
When doubt or revolt appears, do not debate it—affirm the higher law. Chant once slowly for recognition, then 3–9 repetitions with firm intention; end in silence, watching the mind become orderly.
Rigvedic svara with emphatic lift on key nouns (vratāni, pavamānasya) and imperative (ruja).
Keep ‘na ādhṛṣe’ clear: do not merge vowels too heavily; let the negation ‘na’ be distinct.
व्रतानि: vṛ- (not ‘vir’), light retroflex ‘ṛ’, आधृषे: long ā; ‘dhṛ’ with vocalic ṛ, दुःध्या: keep visarga effect before dhy (duḥ-dhyā) without adding extra vowel, पृतन्यति: ‘pṛ’ vocalic ṛ; ‘ny’ palatal cluster
Commanding, clean articulation; slightly sharper consonants on ruja and duḥ-dhyā.
