जागर्तव्यमतन्द्रिभ्यामद्यप्रभृति रात्रिषु। योगक्षेमौ हि सीताया वर्तेते लक्ष्मणावयोः॥
O Lakshmana, from now on we must be sleeplessly vigilant at night. The welfare and safety of Sita depend on us both.
Apramāda and shared responsibility are essential to protect the vulnerable; dharma is maintained through disciplined watchfulness.
Practice of apramāda: disciplined vigilance in daily life; guarding one’s commitments and dependents.
Apramāda as a spiritual virtue (later emphasized in Vedānta): vigilance over the ‘inner Sītā’ (buddhi/śraddhā) against rākṣasa-like vāsanās.
Apramāda praised as the path to amṛtatva in later Upaniṣadic teaching (echoed conceptually); here applied to practical dharma.
Rātri (context: nights from today onward)
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 3.10–3.12 (forest vigilance and protection of Sītā); Mahābhārata: Udyogaparvan counsel on apramāda and guarding dependents (general parallel)
Concept of ‘yogakṣema’ later prominent in Bhagavadgītā 9.22 (semantic parallel, not direct quotation)
Lakṣmaṇa’s night-guard episodes across Araṇyakāṇḍa; protective stance during exile
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Commanding
Uccāra (slightly higher), crisp tempo
Dharma as responsibility: protection of the vulnerable and fulfillment of one’s duty through vigilance and disciplined conduct.
In the forest life of exile, Rāma instructs Lakṣmaṇa to remain alert at night to safeguard Sītā.
Protective duty and foresight—Rāma’s careful planning to uphold safety and righteousness.
