Sukta 1.161

Rishi

Rbhus (collective seers/artisans) traditionally associated with this sukta; specific attribution not provided in input

Devata

Agni as dūta; narrative frame concerns the Rbhus and the transformation of the cup (camasá)

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Mantra 14

Inside Sukta 161

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Riddling inquiry around what is ‘best’ and ‘youngest,’ and what mission is moving—introducing Agni as brotherly messenger and the problem of ritual perfection (the cup/vessel).

  2. Development

The hymn unfolds as a narrative of testing, instruction, and refinement: the Ṛbhus’ craft is evaluated, their discipline is hinted through ritual dialogue (water as cleanser; Soma-rapture in the third pressing), and workmanship becomes a sacred qualification.

  3. Climax

The transformation motif—symbolized by the camasá and the rite’s ‘ripening’—peaks as perfected work earns divine delight and recognition, turning human-like artisans into god-like powers.

  4. Where it settles

A cosmic panorama closes the hymn: Maruts, Agni, Vāta, and Varuṇa move in their domains, all ‘seeking’ the children of power (the Ṛbhus), affirming that perfected skill harmonized with ṛta draws universal support.

The deity: Agni within a Ṛbhu-centered narrative

  • In the VedaAgni is the bright, ever-young fire—kindled among men, bearing offerings, and moving between worlds as messenger and priestly power. In this hymn’s frame, Agni is addressed as ‘brother’ and as the one who carries or mediates the Ṛbhus’ mission and recognition.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods; conveyor of oblations; awakener of ritual efficacy; catalyst through which crafted forms and spoken praise become acceptable in the divine realm.
  • Inner significanceThe discerning will and transformative heat of aspiration: the inner ‘fire’ that refines raw material (speech, intention, work) into a perfected offering, enabling ascent from ordinary skill to sacred mastery.

The seer

  • Dīrghatamas Aucathya (traditional attribution); hymn centers on the Ṛbhus (Ṛbhavaḥ / Saudhanvanāḥ)Aucathya (associated with Ucathya/Angirasa line in later tradition); Ṛbhus linked with Sudhanvan in the hymn’s epithets · Dīrghatamas is famed for enigmatic, philosophical and riddle-like hymns; the Ṛbhus are famed as archetypal Vedic craftsmen who attain divinity through perfected work (including the camasá transformation).

  • Ṛbhu-related praise motifs across early Rigvedic hymns, especially in passages celebrating divine craftsmanship and Soma ritual perfection

The rite, step by step

  • Kindle Agni and establish the fire as the rite’s messenger (dūta).
  • Recite the hymn as praise of Ṛbhu-skill and as a consecration of ritual implements (especially the cup/camasá and wooden vessel/drōṇa).
  • Link the recitation to the Soma sequence: acknowledge the pressings (notably the third savana) and the theme of ‘mādana’ (rapture/intoxication) as ripening of the work.
  • Offer oblations through Agni while affirming non-blame of the vessel: perfection is achieved by right making and right use, not by disparagement.
  • Conclude with the hymn’s widening cosmic frame—Maruts, Vāta, Varuṇa—signaling that all powers converge upon the perfected workers and their rite.

Offerings

  • Ghee/ājyāhuti into Agni
