Curious

What she asks

Whether the liberated (mukta) retains consciousness, and how differing śāstric standpoints reconcile this.

Core idea

Apparent consensus (‘vipreṣu dṛśyate’) about mukta-caitanya must be refined by śāstra-bheda: different textual lenses define liberation differently; Purāṇas are invoked as pramāṇa within their domain.

In practice

When studying mokṣa doctrines, identify the operative pramāṇas and definitions (jīvanmukti/videhamukti; saguṇa/nirguṇa); avoid flattening distinct śāstric positions into one.

FAQs

It reflects a Purāṇic hermeneutic method: philosophical claims (here, about liberation and consciousness) are framed as matters clarified by śāstra-specific viewpoints and corroborated through Purāṇic testimony, illustrating how Purāṇas position themselves within broader Sanskrit intellectual traditions.

No geographic location is mentioned in this verse; it is primarily concerned with doctrinal distinction and textual authority.

The verse promotes disciplined inquiry: differences in philosophical conclusions should be approached through careful attention to authoritative textual frameworks (śāstra) and comparative reading of Purāṇic sources, rather than through assertion alone.
