atha hainaṃ atriḥ papraccha yājñavalkyaṃ—pṛcchāmi tvā yājñavalkya, ayajñopavītī kathaṃ brāhmaṇa iti | sa hovāca yājñavalkyaḥ—idamevāsya tad yajñopavītaṃ ya ātmā | apaḥ prāśyācamya—ayaṃ vidhiḥ parivrājakānām | vīrādhvāne vā anāśake vā apāṃ praveśe vā agnipraveśe vā mahāprasthāne vā | atha parivrāḍ vivarṇavāsā muṇḍo'parigrahaḥ śucir adrohī bhaikṣaṇo brahmabhūyāya bhavatīti | yady āturaḥ syāt manasā vācā saṃnyaset | eṣa panthā brahmaṇā hānuvittaḥ; tena eti saṃnyāsī brahmavid—ityevamevaiṣa bhagavan yājñavalkyaḥ ||5||

Then Atri asked Yājñavalkya: “I ask you, Yājñavalkya—how is one a brāhmaṇa without the sacred thread (yajñopavīta)?” Yājñavalkya replied: “This itself is his sacred thread—namely, the Self. Having drunk water and performed sipping (ācamana)—this is the rule for wandering renunciants, whether on a heroic journey, or in fasting unto death, or in entering water, or in entering fire, or in the great departure. Then the wandering mendicant, wearing discolored garments, shaven-headed, without possessions, pure, non-injurious, living on alms, becomes fit for Brahmanhood. If one is ill, one should renounce by mind and speech. This path was known by Brahmā (as the tradition received); by it the renunciant goes forth as a knower of Brahman—thus indeed (said) the venerable Yājñavalkya.

Ātman as the true yajñopavīta; saṃnyāsa-dharma; inner renunciation beyond external symbolsMahavakya: Indirect: emphasizes identity with the Self as the primary sanctifier, resonant with ‘ahaṃ brahmāsmi’ (Self as Brahman) though not phrased as a mahāvākya.YajurŚukla (Vājasaneyin) ShakhaChandas: Prose
