Sukta 8.43
ते घेदग्ने स्वाध्योऽहा विश्वा नृचक्षसः । तरन्तः स्याम दुर्गहा ॥
té ghéd agne svā́dhyo áhā víśvā nṛ-cákṣasaḥ | tárantaḥ syāma durgáhā ||
O Agni, may we be masters of all our days, seeing with the vision proper to men; and crossing over, may we pass beyond what is difficult to traverse.
With Agni as guide, the seeker prays for true human seeing (nṛ-cakṣas)—a purified perception that aligns life with the soul’s aim. ‘Mastery of days’ means conscious governance of time and circumstance through awakened will. ‘Crossing the hard passages’ is the overcoming of inner obstacles—habit, fear, inertia, and subconscient resistance—by the flame of aspiration and discernment.
When perception is purified and will is kindled, life becomes governable; difficulties are crossed not by force alone but by illumined endurance and inner guidance.
safe passage, inner mastery, overcoming obstacles, Agni guidance
The voice turns from invocation and offering to attainment: mastery of time, right seeing, and crossing difficulty—classic markers of Agni as yogic guide through the evolutionary journey.
Guide across perilous transitions between states/worlds; guardian of the path of ṛta.
Gives courage and clarity; burns confusion; supports perseverance through inner crisis and change.
Prayer for safe passage and mastery: used as a protective and success-seeking formula during transitions in the ritual (crossings, commencements, completion).

4×8 (approx.)
Forward-moving, with a ‘crossing’ momentum in the latter half.
Builds resolve; the rhythm supports endurance and a sense of traversing a passage.
Prayer for safe passage and mastery: used as a protective and success-seeking formula during transitions in the ritual (crossings, commencements, completion).
As a prayer for safe passage and success during extended rites or journeys (outer/inner)
Recitation as protective and aspirational formula
Use before challenging tasks or during transitions (grief, change, recovery) as a mantra of inner crossing and right vision.
from √ ‘to cross’ (PIE *terh₁- ‘cross over’; cf. English ‘through’ is related in broader crossing semantics). (cákṣas-) ‘sight’ from √ ‘see’ (PIE *kʷekʷ- is debated; but ‘see’ roots are archaic). (duḥ-gáha-) duḥ- ‘bad/difficult’ + gáha ‘ford/entry’ from √ ‘to plunge, enter’: obstacles as difficult inner crossings.
self-mastery (svādhya), discernment (cakṣas), crossing beyond difficulty (tṛ)
Right seeing (nṛ-cakṣas) aligns action with ṛta; mastery of days implies living in the law of truth.
Truth as clear perception and faithful endurance through difficulty.
Evolutionary crossing: from lower to higher state through Agni’s leading force.
Yoga of transformation: tapas-led crossing of durgahā (hard passages) toward a more luminous humanity.
day (ahā)
Day = conscious field of experience; crossing = transition between inner states; fire = guiding will-light.
Cultivate ‘right seeing’ and inner mastery of time: observe the day as an offering, guided by a steady flame of will.
Ajna (clear seeing) supported by Manipura (will)
4-4-6 breathing: inhale 4 (gather), hold 4 (see clearly), exhale 6 (cross/let go), repeating with the mantra mentally.
Steady courage with lucid perception.
At the start of the day, repeat the mantra and set one clear inner rule (svādhyaḥ): ‘I act from the flame, not from impulse.’ In difficulty, return to the phrase ‘tarantaḥ syāma durgahā’ as a cue to widen, breathe, and move forward without haste.
Three-tone; keep a rising energy through ‘tarantaḥ’ and a resolved fall at the end ‘durgahā’.
Articulate compounds: su-ādhyaḥ (not ‘svādhyo’ slurred), nṛ-cakṣasaḥ with clear retroflex ṛ and kṣ.
nṛ: vocalic ṛ, short and clear., cakṣ: pronounce kṣ conjunct distinctly., durgahā: dur-ga-hā with long ā; avoid turning ‘ga’ into ‘gha’., Keep ‘te ghed’ lightly connected but not merged.
Firm, forward, slightly intensified on the ‘crossing’ phrase; end calm.
