मन्थराप्रेरणा · वरद्वय-स्मरणं च
Manthara’s Provocation and the Recalling of Two Boons
Spoken by Kaikeyi to MantharaSetting: अयोध्या (antaḥpura)
आसन्याश्शम्बरे मायास्सहस्रमसुराधिपे ॥४५॥
सर्वास्त्वयि निविष्टास्ता भूयश्चान्यास्सहस्रशः ।
āsanyāḥ śambare māyāḥ sahasram asurādhipe ||45||
sarvāḥ tvayi niviṣṭās tā bhūyaś cānyāḥ sahasraśaḥ |
In you reside a thousand deceitful means more than all the thousand mayas (tricks) of Sambara, king of the asuras, was capable of.
माया as projecting power (विक्षेप) that can enthrall minds; when yoked to desire, it becomes bondage.
श्वेताश्वतर: ‘मायां तु प्रकृतिं विद्यान्’—māyā as power; here ethically inverted toward intrigue.
वािल्मीकि-रामायण 2.9.47 (continued imagery of māyā lodged in Mantharā)
Vedic/Itihāsa motif of asura-māyā (e.g., asuras’ illusory powers in Purāṇic narratives)
अयोध्याकाण्ड: मन्थरा’s role as catalyst for exile
अनुष्टुप् (Anuṣṭubh)
Solemn
Measured, slightly grave; emphasis on ‘मायाः’ and ‘सहस्रम्’
The verse cautions against praising deceit as ‘skill.’ In dharmic terms, manipulation (māyā used for harm) corrupts judgment and leads to unrighteous outcomes.
Kaikeyī, influenced by Mantharā, flatters her by comparing her craftiness to the famed demon Śambara’s illusions.
A distorted ‘virtue’—cleverness—is celebrated, but the epic frames such cleverness as morally dangerous when severed from satya (truth) and dharma.
