There in the capital of my father with its lovely cross-roads and squares, well-laid highways, full of mansions and palaces encrusted with all kinds of precious stones, teeming with elephants, horses and chariots, resounding with trumpets, and with well-being everywhere, and plenty of pleasure-gardens, and parks and community festivals, people sound in health would be moving about in great comfort.
A ruler’s realm is measured by public ease, order, and auspiciousness; civic prosperity is a visible fruit of rājadharma.
Smaraṇa of an ideal dharmic society can inspire gratitude and responsibility toward communal welfare.
External prosperity (ratna, utsava) contrasted with inner lack; the city as kṣetra of dharma where order mirrors inner harmony (antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi).
Chāndogya’s ideal of śānti through ordered life; prosperity as secondary to satya and dharma (implicit contrast with the coming exile).
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 1.5 (Ayodhyā-varṇana in Bālakāṇḍa); Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.71IJ.73 (Ayodhyā’s grief after Rāma’s departure, as foil to this splendor)
Vedic rājya-śrī motifs (prosperous realm with music, roads, and cattle/wealth imagery)
Ayodhyā described as sarvakalyāṇasampūrṇā elsewhere; recurring city-ideal contrasted with vanavāsa
Anuṣṭubh (predominant; descriptive anuṣṭubh cadence)
Narrative
Madhyama-gati, dīrgha on compounds for grandeur
The verse evokes rājadhrama/ideal civic order: a righteous realm is marked by safety, prosperity, public joy, and the well-being of ordinary people.
In the midst of exile and uncertainty, the speaker recalls the splendor and social harmony of the capital, imagining people living and moving about happily.
A value for public welfare and ordered society—measuring a kingdom’s greatness by the flourishing of its people.
