What the texts say
In the Mudgala Purana, the incarnation of Ekadanta is described as the upholder of Brahman for embodied beings, the slayer of Madasura, and is remembered as riding a mouse. Mudgala Purana 1.20.6 It tells that when the wicked Ganasura destroyed Dharma, the Lord manifested as the son of Kapila, known as Ekadanta. Mudgala Purana 2.55.46 Madasura, king of the Daityas, reflects on the meaning of the name Ekadanta and understands in his heart the Lord of Obstacles. Mudgala Purana 2.53.45 In a salutation, Madasura addresses Ekadanta as one who takes the form of Maya and the illusionist, and Ganesha as always of the nature of Brahman. Mudgala Purana 2.54.9 In a later hymn of mental worship, Ekadanta is addressed as Lord of obstacles and offered praise joined with the essence of the Vedas, Smritis and Puranas. Mudgala Purana 5.38.71
