The fair-winged made speech; upon the heavenly hollow the black, the swift, bestirred themselves in dance. When they lead down the upper one’s outlet, much seed they have deposited, resting upon the Sun.
The fair-winged beings made speech; on the heavenly hollow the black swift ones danced. When they lead down the upper one’s outlet, much seed they deposited, resting on the Sun.
Vāc is fashioned as a controlling technology: speech orders chaotic, dark, restless forces by directing them to an exit (niṣkṛti). ‘Seed’ (retaḥ) symbolizes restored potency once obstruction is guided out; Sūrya provides stable, clarifying support.
Naming and directing (skillful speech) can transform chaos into flow: when the ‘exit path’ is re-established, vitality returns and is stabilized by clarity (solar consciousness).
To control and conduct a dark, restless harmful agency to its ‘exit’ and to re-establish vital essence (retaḥ) under solar stability.

Sāyaṇa treats ‘suparṇa’ as bird-powers that ‘fashion speech’—i.e., mantra as a crafted instrument. The ‘black swift’ movers are read as hostile/disease agencies; their restless motion is checked by ‘leading down’ to an appointed ‘exit’ (niṣkṛti), a technical notion for expelling the affliction. ‘Retaḥ’ is glossed as vital essence: either restored generativity in the patient or the ‘essence’ secured by the rite; ‘sun-supported’ marks cosmic stabilization of life-force.
Apotropaic healing through Vāc: directing harmful agencies to an exit and re-stabilizing vitality under solar order.
Highlights Atharvanic doctrine that speech is an operative substance: Vāc is ‘made’ and then used to conduct elimination (niṣkṛti) and restore generative essence (retaḥ).
Vāc (Speech) with Sūrya as stabilizing support
Vāc structures and directs; Sūrya anchors processes in rhythm, clarity, and lawful movement—turning expulsion into restoration rather than chaos.
Guides elimination, restores vitality/seed, clarifies mind; supports recovery after expulsion.
Prevents re-entry by restoring correct channels and solar order.
4 extended pādas with a narrative-descriptive flow
Dense imagery and compounds (dyavyākhare, sūryaśrita) often produce metrical irregularities typical of Atharvanic healing diction.
Swirling then resolving: quick motion imagery followed by a ‘settling’ on the Sun.
Moves from agitation to guided discharge; ends with stabilizing firmness.
Define a ‘niṣkṛti’ (exit-route): a doorway, boundary-line, or a prepared channel for removal.
Recite the mantra while gesturing downward and outward, ‘leading’ the harm to the exit.
Conclude with a stabilizing act oriented to the Sun (facing east; brief sun-gaze or invocation) to ‘seat’ vitality.
Kauśika Sūtra: expulsion (niṣkṛti) and control-leading (nayana) procedures within bhaisajya cycles (edition-dependent numbering).
Atharvan priest as ‘leader-out’ (neta): marks the exit, conducts the harmful agency away by speech and gesture, then seals the patient’s vitality with solar orientation.
Recite as a directing charm during cleansing or elimination-focused healing (bath, fumigation, regulated evacuation), ending with a brief sun-facing moment for ‘solar sealing’.
Morning (solar anchoring) or at the time of treatment aimed at expulsion/discharge.
Householder recitation feasible; specialist may integrate with broader krimighna/śānti procedure.
Combine with morning sunlight exposure and a structured routine (hydration, bowel regularity), using the mantra as a cognitive ‘directive script’.
Speech/mantra (Vāc) as instrument; Solar support (Sūrya) as stabilizer
Implicit solar/fire principle via Sūrya as stabilizer.
Vāc functions as the ‘tool’ and ‘medicine’; Sūrya is the disinfecting/ordering principle; retaḥ is the conserved treasure recovered when obstruction is cleared.
Restless ‘black’ harmful agency requiring guided expulsion; possible urogenital/seed-related depletion or blockage imagery (retaḥ, niṣkṛti)
Implied ‘outlet’ (niṣkṛti), possibly urogenital or excretory channel (not explicit).
Mantric control (Vāc) conducts the harmful force to an outlet; vitality/seed is re-established and stabilized by solar order (Sūrya).
Śodhana via proper elimination pathways (mala-mārga); restoration of śukra/ojas (retaḥ as vital essence) with solar agni regulation.
Psychosomatic regulation via guided breathing/speech; support for elimination routines and recovery of vitality after infection/stress; could metaphorically fit pelvic-floor/urogenital health where ‘flow’ and ‘exit’ matter.
The ‘black swift’ agents (pathogens/forces) and the disordered process they cause.
To bring harmful restless forces under control, guide them to an exit, and restore generative vitality under solar stability.
Command-and-channel method: create operative speech (vāc akrata) → lead to outlet (niyanti… niṣkṛtim) → seal with solar anchoring (sūryaśrita).
Recurrence through misdirected channels; ongoing depletion of vitality.
Vāc-śuddhi: use speech as a channeling force—few words, exact intention, directed release.
Viśuddha (speech) and Svādhiṣṭhāna (retaḥ/creative essence)
Exhale-lengthening (1:2 inhale:exhale) while mentally repeating the key directive ‘ni… niṣkṛtim’.
A dark swarm guided through a luminous gate downward/outward; then a sun-disc stabilizing the cleared space; a warm golden seed-light returning.
Pratyavekṣaṇa (observant) moving into prasāda (clarity).
Keep daily speech ‘clean’: reduce harsh words for 24 hours after recitation to maintain Vāc as medicine.
सुपर्णाः (suparṇāḥ): keep ṇ retroflex.; द्यव्या॑खरे (dyavyākhare): articulate dy- cluster; avoid inserting extra vowel.; निष्कृतिम् (niṣkṛtim): crisp ṣkṛ cluster; vocalic ṛ.; सूर्यश्रितः (sūryaśritaḥ): śr cluster clear; do not reduce to ‘surya-sitaḥ’.
Narrative pacing: slightly quicker through ‘kṛṣṇā iṣirā anartiṣuḥ’, then slow and weight the ‘ni… niṣkṛtim’ clause; finish steady on ‘sūryaśritaḥ’.
Mark the directional particles (upa, ni) clearly; they are functional ‘steering’ words in Atharvanic performance.
Clear, directive, then calming at the end.
This verse exemplifies Atharvanic ‘channel magic’: the mantra’s particles and verbs enact the pathway of elimination; recite with a felt sense of ‘leading out’.
Need to ‘clear out’ lingering disturbance (infection recovery, mental agitation, compulsive loops) and restore vitality/creative energy.
Morning with brief sun exposure; during a cleansing regimen; when needing to re-establish healthy routines.
Increased sense of control, clarity, and restored energy after release of what is harmful.
For urogenital symptoms or severe anxiety, seek professional care; avoid over-interpretation of ‘seed’ imagery—use it as vitality metaphor if appropriate.
No plant is explicit; the operative ‘technology’ is spatial: niṣkṛti (exit-route) plus downward-leading gestures. The mantra encodes a control schema (agitated black agents → led down → expelled), then a restoration schema (retaḥ stabilized by Sūrya).
It presumes a specialist who can define ritual space (exit routes) and manipulate cosmic supports (Sun) through Vāc. The patient’s body is mapped onto cosmic topography (‘upper’ region, outlet), reflecting priestly control over embodied space.
The cosmic imagery (suparṇa, Sūrya) is archaic, but the technicalization of ‘niṣkṛti’ as an expulsion outlet is strongly Atharvanic and pragmatic, aligning with domestic healing rites.
Gopatha’s Atharvanic hermeneutic often treats spatial correspondences and ‘ways out’ for evil as real channels activated by brahman (formulated speech). This verse exemplifies that: Vāc is ‘made,’ then used to conduct the harmful agency to niṣkṛti, and to re-seat vitality under solar order.
