Inside Sukta 6

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins with the performative act-name—"maṇibandhanam"—announcing the binding as the rite itself and immediately directing the charm against the hostile rival’s headship.

  2. What it asks

That the bound maṇi confer ojas and varcas, guard the wearer, and grant heightened hearing and sight while defeating haters.

  3. Where its power lies

Efficacy is grounded in exemplary divine precedent (Bṛhaspati binding the maṇi; Soma releasing its boon) and in the mantra’s capacity to "hew away" hostile authority by ojas.

  4. How it closes

Seals the charm with Agni Jātavedas through well-ordered fuel and oblations, asking for sumati, svasti, progeny, sight, and cattle—anchoring amulet-power in sacrificial confirmation.

Kind of hymn

Maṇi / Paustika with Abhicarika edge (amulet-protection and rival-subduing)

What it is for

To empower an amulet-binding that protects, increases ojas/varcas, improves sight and hearing, and ritually neutralizes or suppresses hostile rivals—then to stabilize these gains through Agni-accepted oblations.

Who it is for

Householders and ritual specialists (Atharvanic practitioner/ purohita) performing protective-prosperity rites for an individual wearer (yajamāna) facing rivalry or needing prestige and bodily strength.

Also used as

  • Shantika
  • Abhicarika (edge)
  • Raksha (protective/apotropaic)
  • Gṛhya-homa (adjunct sealing)

The deity

Maṇi is the jewel/amulet treated as a sovereign protective potency—an embodied ojas that can be bound onto the body, made to "milk" splendour (varcas), and weaponized against hostility. Soma appears as the one who releases/returns the maṇi’s boon for heightened faculties, while Agni Jātavedas seals the rite through homa and welfare-bestowal.

Powers of the deity

  • Protects the wearer (rakṣas/apotropaic shielding)
  • Augments ojas (vital force) and varcas (radiant authority/prestige)
  • Strengthens hearing and sight (śrotra, cakṣus)
  • Subdues rivals and haters (bhrātṛvya/dviṣant)
  • Turns back or "severs" hostile intention and dominance
  • Secures prosperity markers: progeny and cattle-wealth when paired with fire-offering

Why the deity is called

Invoked to consecrate the physical binding of the amulet so it becomes an active guardian and enhancer of vitality and status, while ritually diminishing the rival’s power and ensuring auspicious increase through Soma- and Agni-linked efficacy.

The seer

  • Atharvanic seer (maṇi-hymn stratum; anukramaṇī-variant attribution)Atharvan. Maṇi- and bandhana-charms (amulet consecration), paustika rites for varcas/ojas, and apotropaic subduing of rivals (bhrātṛvya-nigraha).

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 10.4 (brahmodya/cosmic speculation; Atharvanic stratum)
  • AV 10.5 (Atharvanic speculative-protective material, anukramaṇī-dependent)
  • AV 19.31–19.34 (selected maṇi/paustika charm cycles in later Atharvanic grouping; attribution varies by tradition)

Preparing for the rite

  • Select a maṇi/amulet (often described as a plate-like piece) and a clean binding cord; if following the hymn’s imagery, include khadira-wood and ghee.
  • Purify the space and the wearer (simple bathing/ācamanā), and place the amulet before the practitioner for mantra-impregnation.
  • If a fire is used, prepare the domestic fire with well-arranged fuel (idhma) and ready oblation materials.

The rite

  • Recite the opening binding-formulae while physically tying (bandhana) the amulet onto the wearer (typically arm/neck according to local practice).
  • At the rival-subduing verses, gesture outward/away (symbolic expulsion) and verbally direct the mantra against dviṣant/bhrātṛvya hostility.
  • At the Soma-linked section, affirm sensory strengthening (śrotra/cakṣus) and varcas increase for the wearer.
  • Conclude with homa verses to Agni Jātavedas, offering ghee and/or suitable oblations, requesting welfare, progeny, sight, and cattle.

What it needs

  • Maṇi (amulet/jewel)
  • Bandhana (binding cord/thread)
  • Khadira wood (for amulet material and/or fuel association)
  • Ghṛta (ghee) for anointing/oblation
  • Idhma (fuel-sticks) for homa (if performed)

When

Performed at morning or early evening as a protective/prosperity binding; especially suitable before contests, assemblies, negotiations, or when rivalry/ill-will is felt. Homa-sealing is ideally done immediately after binding.

The main substance

Maṇi (amulet/jewel) with bandhana (binding cord)

Herbs

  • Khadira (Acacia catechu) (wood associated with the maṇi in 10.6.8)

Amulets

  • Maṇi/plate-like amulet (phāla)
  • Khadira-wood amulet or insert
  • Binding thread/cord (bandhana)

How it is prepared

Cleanse the amulet and cord; optionally anoint with ghee. Bind the maṇi onto the wearer while reciting the binding and protection verses; if performing the seal, kindle Agni with arranged idhma and offer ghee while reciting the concluding homa mantras.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a jewel/amulet treated as a personified protective power. The hymn consecrates its binding so it actively guards the wearer and generates vitality (ojas) and radiance (varcas).

Its main orientation is paustika-protective (strength, prestige, welfare), but it has an abhicārika edge: several lines aim to suppress or "cut down" the hostile rival’s potency and authority.

Bṛhaspati provides a divine precedent for binding the maṇi, Soma is linked with releasing its boons (notably hearing and sight), and Agni Jātavedas seals the rite through oblations that stabilize welfare such as progeny and cattle.
