Inside Sukta 114

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by bearing ‘thought-offerings’ (matīḥ) to Rudra, requesting peace and uninjured nourishment for the whole settlement—two-footed and four-footed alike.

  2. Development

Praise intensifies: Rudra is honored as powerful and as the Maruts’ father, while the poet repeatedly pivots from awe to supplication—asking for amṛta-like support and ‘mortal nourishment’ that sustains life, children, and lineage.

  3. Climax

A direct plea for Rudra’s graciousness (mṛḻa) and attentive hearing—Rudra ‘with the Maruts’ is asked to receive the call and convert dangerous force into protection and vitality.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with a spoken namas and a widening circle of support: Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven are invoked to uphold the granted protection and prosperity.

The deity: Rudra

  • In the VedaRudra is addressed as tavas (mighty), kapardin (tress-bearing), and as the Father of the Maruts—terrible in wrath yet the most implored for mercy, health, and safe dwelling. He is approached with namas (homage) and with carefully crafted praise meant to soothe and strengthen him.
  • Cosmic functionRegulator of stormy, disruptive forces and sudden afflictions, while also serving as the supreme healer who restores order, vitality, and communal prosperity when properly invoked.
  • Inner significanceRepresents the raw, transformative intensity within life—fear, pain, and crisis—capable of becoming purification and renewal when met with humility, truth, and disciplined speech.

The seer

  • Hiraṇyastūpa Āṅgirasa (traditional attribution for RV 1.114)Āṅgirasa (Angiras line) · Remembered as a seer of Rudra-hymns that balance reverence and fear with a strong emphasis on Rudra’s healing, protective grace (mṛḻa/mṛḍayati motif).

Attributes of the deity

  • Mighty and awe-inspiring (tavasaḥ)
  • Tress-bearing/ascetic-marked (kapardin)
  • Father/leader of the Maruts
  • Healer and bestower of welfare (mṛḻa)
  • Protector of settlement, cattle, and progeny
  • Swift to punish yet responsive to sincere homage (namas)

Also by this seer

  • Traditional association with early Maṇḍala 1 Rudra praises; the hymn is also sometimes linked in later tradition to Kutsa Āṅgirasa for parts/recensions (as in some anukramaṇī attributions).
  • Participation in the broader Āṅgirasa corpus that emphasizes effective speech (brahman/vāc) as a means of protection and prosperity.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the fire (gārhapatya/āhavanīya as applicable) and establish a calm, purified space.
  • Recite the opening praise to Rudra, explicitly seeking śam (peace) for dvipād and catuṣpād (humans and cattle).
  • Offer oblations while repeating key pacifying requests (mṛḻa / be gracious) and prosperity petitions (puṣṭi, tokā/tanaya).
  • Invoke Rudra as Marutvān (with the Maruts), asking him to hear the havis/hava (call).
  • Conclude by extending the protection through allied deities (e.g., Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Dyāvā-Pṛthivī), sealing the prayer for communal stability.
  • End with silent contemplation and a final namas, orienting the rite toward non-injury and wellbeing for all beings in the settlement.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into the fire
  • Soma (where part of a Soma context) or symbolic soma/oblations in later practice
  • Grain/food offerings (anna) as prosperity tokens
  • Water/clarified offerings for cooling and pacification (śamana emphasis)

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Rudra to grant peace, health, and freedom from affliction, especially for the whole community—people, cattle, food supply, and the continuity of children and lineage.

It is a Vedic way of including everyone in the settlement: humans (two-footed) and animals like cattle (four-footed), so wellbeing is complete and shared.

The closing invokes Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven as witnesses and supporters, reinforcing that the requested protection is upheld by the wider cosmic order.
