A direct plea to the gods: “Slay us not… let not the serpent smite,” extending protection to children and the whole household.
That the serpent be restrained—unable to dart forth—and that its gaping jaws be made to close; accompanied by respectful homage to serpent-kinds and divine controllers.
The mantra’s efficacy is expressed as concrete anatomical binding: tooth against tooth, jaw against jaw, tongue against tongue—ritually canceling the mechanics of biting and envenomation.
A sequence of namo (homage) formulas functions as the sealing gesture, reaffirming submission/appeasement and the higher divine restraint over serpent forces.
mā no devā ahiḥ vadhīt
saṃ te hanmi datā dataḥ
Raksha / Apotropaic (Serpent-protection)
Prevention of serpent-strike and death by bite; household-wide safeguarding by restraining the serpent’s movement and disabling its biting/venom-delivery capacity.
Householders, travelers, herdsmen, and ritual specialists seeking quick protective recitation for family members (including children) and dependents in serpent-prone areas.
The hymn treats serpents both as a class of dangerous beings to be appeased by respectful naming and as a hostile agent whose biting apparatus must be ritually restrained. The “divine tribes” are invoked as higher powers who can hold the serpent in check.
To avert serpent-attack on the family (children and dependents) by both propitiating serpent-kinds (Asita, Babhru, Tirascirāja, Svajā) and compelling restraint of the serpent’s mouth-organs so it cannot bite or inject poison.
At first sign of serpent presence, before entering snake-prone spaces, or immediately after a near-encounter; traditionally effective at liminal times (dusk/dawn) when danger is anticipated.
Mantra (namo-propitiation and stambhana ‘closing’ speech-act)
No fixed pharmacological preparation is required in this sukta; efficacy centers on correct recitation, respectful naming, and the visualization of ‘closing/binding’ the serpent’s mouth-organs.
It is used for protection from serpents—preventing attack and neutralizing the bite by ritually restraining the serpent and ‘closing’ its mouth-organs through mantra.
In Atharvanic practice, respectful address and correct naming pacify dangerous classes of beings; the namo-formula functions as propitiation and as a sealing act of restraint.
Its primary intent is preventive and apotropaic (rakṣā) and includes stambhana (disabling the bite). In lived practice it may be recited in emergencies, but it is not a full medical protocol by itself.
