Devata

Soma Pavamāna

Inside Sukta 52

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is invoked to encircle the worshippers with shining protection and to bring ‘ancient wealth’ and vāja while flowing to the filter.

  2. Development

The hymn emphasizes Soma’s unstoppable, purified movement and his steadfast generosity—no one can ‘shake’ or diminish his gift.

  3. Climax

Soma is asked to ‘shake down’ the violent striker—turning aggression back and establishing safety alongside abundance.

  4. Where it settles

A final prayer asks Soma’s multiplied helps (hundredfold or thousandfold) and a swelling increase of rayi through continued purification.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma as the pressed, flowing, and self-purifying sacred drink, called Indu (“the bright drop”), who runs to the filter (pavitra), shines, and bestows vāja (vital force, prize, strength) and rayi (wealth).
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality and inspiration: Soma’s purified flow empowers gods and humans, sustains cosmic order through sacrificial circulation, and drives away hostility through protective potency.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified mind/nectar of consciousness: as Soma is filtered, so awareness is refined—yielding clarity, courage, generous power, and inner abundance.

The seer

  • Anonym (R̥gvedic Soma-Pavamāna tradition)This sukta is transmitted without a specific seer-name; such anonymity is common in parts of Mandala 9 where the liturgical Soma-flow hymns are preserved as a priestly corpus rather than as individual family compositions.
