Devata

Indra (with Soma as offering-substance)

Chandas

Trishtubh (common for Indra-Soma hymns; likely here)

Inside Sukta 104

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is declared pressed specifically for Indra; he is urgently summoned to the yajña with his tawny steeds to drink.

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies praise through the language of brahman and inspired speech, portraying the sacrifice itself as calling Indra—who knows the rite’s course and gives securely.

  3. Climax

Indra is invoked as the fierce helper in clashes, the slayer of obstructions, whose empowered action turns inspired invocation into tangible victory and gain.

  4. Where it settles

It settles into a confident communal prayer for good fortune—calling Indra the bountiful, heroic winner of riches, who hears and comes to aid.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the puruhūta (much-invoked), maghavān (bountiful), nṛtama (most manly/most heroic), who comes with hari (tawny steeds) to the pressing and drinks the soma that empowers his victorious might. He is invoked as fierce in battle, a hearer of calls, and the slayer of vṛtrāṇi—obstructing powers that block waters, light, and abundance.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases and reorders the flow of life-force—breaking obstruction, enabling the movement of waters/light, and securing victory and prosperity for the community through ṛta-aligned power.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will and courageous clarity that breaks inner inertia, fear, and limitation; Soma represents the distilled delight/rapture that energizes insight and right action. Together they figure the transformation of inspired speech (brahman/giraḥ) into effective power that overcomes impediments.

Frequently Asked Questions

It calls Indra to come quickly to the sacrifice, drink the freshly pressed Soma, and use that power to remove obstacles and bring victory, strength, and prosperity.

Soma is the ritual offering that “feeds” Indra’s heroic energy. The hymn links the pressed Soma, the sacred words, and Indra’s action as one process that produces protection and success.

Indra can be read as courageous will and clear force, while Soma is uplifting delight and inspiration. The hymn then becomes a prayer to energize inner strength, break resistance, and move toward abundance and right action.
