Inside Sukta 79

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Dawn expands the human paths and awakens the five tribes, initiating the day’s movement and perception.

  2. Development

Her well-directed rays and the Sun’s vision together open the two worlds; Dawn is praised as bountiful and as one who grants ‘hearings’ (fame/auspicious report) and treasures to good work.

  3. Climax

Uṣas is likened to Indra in puissance and generosity, distributing wide gifts and kindling inner fire—an apex of power and beneficence.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn turns to practical blessing: Dawn is asked to impel the inner god, send truthful inspirations, steady our thoughts for attainment, and guard us with enduring well-being.

The deity: Uṣas, with Sūrya as associated power

  • In the VedaUṣas is the radiant Daughter of Heaven who arrives with well-yoked, clear-seeing rays, awakens sleepers and peoples, and reveals forms and paths; her coming is regularly paired with the arising of Sūrya and the opening of the two worlds (rodasī).
  • Cosmic functionShe renews time each day, dispels darkness, sets beings to their works, and prepares the space in which the Sun’s order and vision become manifest.
  • Inner significanceThe awakening of consciousness: clarity after inertia, truthful inspiration (sūnṛtā), and the inner ‘kindling’ that turns thought toward right action and auspicious gain.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Saptarṣi; chief seer of the Vasiṣṭha family) · Foremost of the Rigvedic seers, celebrated for hymns of insight and kingship, and for the Vasiṣṭha–Viśvāmitra rivalry motif in later tradition; associated with the Bharatas and the sacral power of the priest (brahman).

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn is primarily addressed to Uṣas (Dawn). Sūrya (the Sun) appears as an associated power who, with Dawn, opens and illumines the two worlds.

It refers to Dawn stirring all human communities into activity—symbolically, the whole social world waking to work, perception, and ordered life as light returns.

Recite it at dawn facing east to cultivate clarity and auspicious beginnings. The closing verse is especially used as a prayer for truthful inspiration, steady thoughts, attainment, and well-being (svasti).
