antárikṣaṁ dhénus tásyā vāyúr vatsáḥ | sā́ me vāyúnā vatséneṣám ū́rjaṁ kā́maṁ duhām | ā́yuḥ prathamáṁ prajā́ṁ póṣaṁ rayíṁ svā́hā
The Mid-air is a milch-cow; of her the Wind is the calf. May she, for me, by Wind as calf, milk forth refreshment, sap, and desire—life first, then offspring, thriving, and wealth: svāhā.
The atmosphere (antarikṣa) is envisioned as a milch-cow, with Vāyu as her calf. Through Vāyu, she is asked to ‘milk’ nourishment, strength, desire, then life, progeny, thriving, and wealth; sealed with svāhā.
Breath (vāyu) is the ‘calf’ that stimulates the cosmos to yield nourishment. By regulating breath, one draws vitality, motivation, and generativity from the surrounding field of life.
Sustenance is relational: when the right ‘extractor’ (skill, rhythm, breath) is applied, the world yields its gifts. Life-force is renewable when we align with natural cycles.
To ‘milk’ nourishment, strength, fulfilled desire, longevity, progeny, prosperity, and wealth from the atmospheric region through the agency of Vāyu (breath/wind).

Sāyaṇa construes the cosmic regions as ‘cows’ whose ‘milk’ is iṣ/ūrj (nourishment and vigor). The ‘calf’ is the deity that draws out the yield: here Vāyu, identified with prāṇa, the enabling force of acquisition. The closing series (āyuḥ…rayiḥ) is a fixed boon-catalog; svāhā marks the mantra as offerable/efficacious, even when used in domestic rites as a performative seal.

Atharvanic tradition (hymn-level attribution varies by anukramaṇī/edition)
Paustika prosperity charms using cosmic-metaphor (dhenu-milking) and prāṇic agency (Vāyu) to draw nourishment, longevity, and wealth.
A classic Atharvanic ‘cosmic economy’ spell: abundance is milked from the subtle world through correct divine linkage—breath as ritual instrument.
Antarikṣa (as Dhenu) with Vāyu (as Vatsa)
Antarikṣa is the intermediary reservoir of rain, winds, and life-supporting currents; Vāyu is the mover/extractor that brings those currents into embodied life.
Supports vitality (ūrj), nourishment (iṣ), and longevity (āyus) through prāṇic alignment.
Protects by strengthening life-force and resilience; prosperity as a shield against misfortune.
Semi-metrical cola with prose-like expansions; mantra is structured by imagery and itemized boons rather than strict syllable count.
Catalogues (iṣam ūrjam kāmam… āyus prathamam…) create rhythmic ‘list-meter’ typical of AV prosperity spells.
Flowing, lactational cadence—longer phrases mimic ‘milking’ and ‘pouring forth’.
Induces a sense of replenishment and fullness; good for slow, breath-synchronized recitation.
Prepare a seated recitation facing east; establish a small domestic fire or a water-vessel as the locus of ‘milking’ (āpyāyana).
Recite the mantra while touching (or symbolically ‘milking’) a cow, or—when no cow is present—touching a water-pot/ladle as substitute for the dhenu.
At ‘svāhā’, make a small oblation (ghee or milk) or perform a concluding sprinkling (prokṣaṇa) over the patron.
Repeat as a triad with the parallel ‘cow’ verses (dyauḥ/dikṣaḥ) to complete the cosmic circuit of nourishment.
Kauśika Sūtra: Paustika/āyuṣya-karmāṇi section for AV 4.39 (general application; exact sūtra numbering varies by edition).
Atharvan priest (domestic officiant) as mantra-reciter and apotropaic-technologist; he synchronizes touch/oblation with the svāhā cadence to ‘activate’ the boon-catalog.
Recited in morning practice or before meals/offerings to invoke nourishment and household thriving; can accompany a small ghee offering with svāhā.
Dawn or morning (vāyu/prāṇa emphasis); also before undertaking work for prosperity.
Householder may recite; a purohita may integrate into paustika rites or homa sequences.
Breath-synchronized recitation as a daily vitality invocation; optional lamp/offering as symbolic ‘svāhā’.
cosmic cow (dhenu) imagery; Vāyu (wind/breath) as ‘calf’; svāhā (offering-seal)
svāhā implies offering-fire context (optional domestic agni).
The ‘substance’ is the atmosphere itself—an invisible nourishment field. Vāyu is both deity and technique (breath), converting subtle abundance into embodied benefits.
General debility, low vitality, failure to thrive (bala-kṣaya), and longevity support rather than a single named disease.
Prāṇa-centric nourishment: aligning breath (Vāyu) to draw ūrj (sap/strength) and iṣ (refreshment) from the subtle environment; psychosomatic strengthening through abundance imagery.
Bala/ojas augmentation; prāṇa-vāyu regulation; rasāyana orientation (longevity, vitality).
Breathwork for stress reduction and energy regulation; visualization supporting motivation and wellbeing; resilience-building practices.
To obtain nourishment, strength, fulfilled desire, longevity, progeny, thriving, and wealth by ‘milking’ the atmosphere through Vāyu.
Cosmic simile-magic (dhenu/vatsa) + list of boons + svāhā sealing, often compatible with offering/oblation performance.
Poverty, weakness, depletion, infertility (broadly framed), and misfortune via strengthening.
Longevity, progeny, household thriving, wealth.
Prāṇa as the ‘calf’ drawing nourishment from the field of life; gratitude-based abundance contemplation.
Anahata (air/prāṇa)
Slow coherent breathing (e.g., 5–6 breaths/min); mentally ‘milk’ on inhale, ‘receive’ on exhale; optionally add gentle kumbhaka if trained.
A luminous sky-cow above; breath as calf; streams of white-gold milk become strength in the body and stability in the home.
Receptive steadiness; non-grasping desire (kāma aligned).
Chant on an empty stomach in the morning; keep attention on the heart-breath axis; end with a brief silence after svāhā to ‘seal’ receptivity.
Flowing recitation; keep compound imagery clear; svāhā delivered as a crisp seal (svara per tradition).
Slight emphasis on ‘vāyur vatsaḥ’ and on the boon-list, especially ‘āyuḥ prathamam’.
Warm, nourishing, resonant—like a blessing over food/breath.
If accompanying an offering, speak ‘svāhā’ exactly at the moment of offering (or lamp gesture) to preserve the ‘seal’ function.

Seeking vitality, household stability, fertility/creativity, and prosperity; recovering from depletion.
Morning breath practice; before meals; before important work; during convalescence as a strengthening prayer.
Greater calm energy, motivation, and a sense of being supported; traditional aim of āyus–prajā–poṣa–rayi increase.
Do not use as substitute for medical care in serious illness; if doing breath retention, follow safe guidance.
No explicit herb appears; the ‘substance’ is conceptualized as cosmic milk (iṣ/ūrj). In Atharvanic therapeutics this functions analogously to a rasāyana: nourishment and life-force are ‘drawn’ from a supra-human reservoir via Vāyu/prāṇa.
The patron’s welfare (āyuḥ, prajā, rayi) is secured through specialist speech-acts (svāhā + controlled recitation), implying a ritual economy where Atharvan priests mediate access to prosperity and longevity.
The cosmic-cow trope is Rigvedic, but the Atharvanic stacking of boon-nouns (iṣ-ūrj-kāma-āyuḥ…) and the pragmatic svāhā closure foreground performativity over praise, a stylistic innovation toward domestic efficacy.
Gopatha’s Atharvanic theology regularly treats mantras as instruments that ‘yoke’ cosmic correspondences (bandhu). This verse exemplifies bandhu: region (antarikṣa) ↔ cow, deity (Vāyu) ↔ calf, result ↔ nourishment/āyuḥ; efficacy lies in correctly aligning these correspondences in rite.
