Vasiṣṭha
Mitra–Varuṇa (with Sūrya as their ‘eye’)
Triṣṭubh
This hymn of Vasiṣṭha praises Mitra and Varuṇa as guardians of ṛta (cosmic order) whose all-seeing “eye,” Sūrya, rises to survey the worlds and discern human impulses. It extols their vast power that upholds Heaven and Earth, contrasts the ordered passage of time with the peril faced by the non-sacrificer, and ends with a prayer to be carried safely beyond all difficult crossings and protected with lasting well-being.

Mantra 1
उद्वां चक्षुर्वरुण सुप्रतीकं देवयोरेति सूर्यस्ततन्वान् । अभि यो विश्वा भुवनानि चष्टे स मन्युं मर्त्येष्वा चिकेत ॥
वरुण, तुम्हारी आँख उठती है, सूर्य जो इतना अच्छा दिखता है। वो दोनों देवताओं के लिए चलता है और अपनी रोशनी फैलाता है। यह सूर्य सारी दुनिया को देखता है। वो लोगों के अंदर क्या चल रहा है, कैसे लोग हैं, यह सब जान लेता है।

प्र वां स मित्रावरुणावृतावा विप्रो मन्मानि दीर्घश्रुदियर्ति । यस्य ब्रह्माणि सुक्रतू अवाथ आ यत्क्रत्वा न शरदः पृणैथे ॥
मित्र और वरुण, तुम दोनों सच्चे हो। रिशि तुम्हारे लिए अपने विचार भेजता है जो दूर तक सुनाई देते हैं। जिसके शब्द भगवान तुम रखते हो, उसका भला होता है। तुम अपनी शक्ति से उसके जीवन को भरते हो जैसे बरसों में फसल आती है।

प्रोरोर्मित्रावरुणा पृथिव्याः प्र दिव ऋष्वाद्बृहतः सुदानू । स्पशो दधाथे ओषधीषु विक्ष्वृधग्यतो अनिमिषं रक्षमाणा ॥
मित्र और वरुण, तुम दोनों बहुत देते हो। धरती से भी, आसमान से भी, तुम्हारी नज़र है। तुमने पौधों में लोगों में अपने लोग रखे हैं जो देखते हैं। वो अलग-अलग जगह खड़े हैं, बिना आँख झपके नज़र रखते हैं।

शंसा मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम शुष्मो रोदसी बद्बधे महित्वा । अयन्मासा अयज्वनामवीराः प्र यज्ञमन्मा वृजनं तिराते ॥
मैं मित्र और वरुण की बात बताता हूँ। उनकी शक्ति इतनी बड़ी है कि धरती और आसमान दोनों उसके नीचे हैं। महीने गुज़र जाते हैं। पर जो लोग यज्ञ नहीं करते, जिनके पास ताकत नहीं है, वो पीछे रह जाते हैं। यज्ञ के रास्ते से हट जाते हैं।

अमूरा विश्वा वृषणाविमा वां न यासु चित्रं ददृशे न यक्षम् । द्रुहः सचन्ते अनृता जनानां न वां निण्यान्यचिते अभूवन् ॥
तुम दोनों बलवान हो, तुम्हारा काम समझदारी से भरा है। तुम्हारा काम में कोई धोखा नहीं, कोई झूठी चमक नहीं। लोग झूठ बोलते हैं, धोखा देते हैं, वो उसमें फंस जाते हैं। पर तुम्हारी बातें छुपी हैं, सिर्फ समझदार लोग जानते हैं।

समु वां यज्ञं महयं नमोभिर्हुवे वां मित्रावरुणा सबाधः । प्र वां मन्मान्यृचसे नवानि कृतानि ब्रह्म जुजुषन्निमानि ॥
मैं मित्र और वरुण को बुला रहा हूँ, पूजा के साथ। यह दोनों देवता हैं जो साथ में काम करते हैं। मैं उनके लिए नए गीत बना रहा हूँ। मेरा मन उनकी तरफ जा रहा है। यह सब शब्द मैंने उनके लिए बनाए हैं। वो यह सब स्वीकार करें।
Mantra 7
इयं देव पुरोहितिर्युवभ्यां यज्ञेषु मित्रावरुणावकारि । विश्वानि दुर्गा पिपृतं तिरो नो यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
यह पूजा मित्र और वरुण के लिए है। यह देवता हमेशा आगे चलते हैं, रास्ता दिखाते हैं। वो हमें मुश्किल से निकाल के साफ रास्ते पे लगाएं। वो हमेशा हमारा ख्याल रखें और हमें ठीक रखें।
