Vasiṣṭha

Devata

Sūrya with Mitra-Varuṇa, Aryaman, Aditi (Ādityas)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; needs confirmation)

This hymn of Vasiṣṭha invokes Sūrya as he rises to proclaim satya (truth) and calls on the Ādityas—especially Mitra–Varuṇa, Aryaman, and Aditi—to guide the worshippers on the divine path. It presents the Ādityas as vigilant guardians of cosmic order who lead even the unawakened mind, provide a “ford” through peril, and carry the devotee beyond difficulties into svasti (well-being). The sukta’s purpose is protection, right-direction (devatrā), and safe passage through moral and existential “durgas” by aligning speech and conduct with ṛta/satya.

Inside Sukta 60

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Sūrya rises proclaiming satya to Mitra–Varuṇa; the worshipper asks to be ‘devatrā’ and dear to Aditi and Aryaman through praise.

  2. Development

The Ādityas are portrayed as vigilant, wise guardians who guide even the unperceiving, and who create a crossing-place (gādha/ford) amid dangerous currents.

  3. Climax

The prayer intensifies into a direct request to be carried to the farther shore of peril—transcending ‘viṣpita’ (dangerous expanse) and ‘durgā’ (hard passages) through divine guardianship.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn seals its intent in a yajña-setting: the ‘purohitī’ (guiding placement/fore-front guidance) is made for Mitra–Varuṇa, and the final plea asks them to protect always with svasti (well-being).

The deity: Sūrya with Mitra–Varuṇa, Aryaman, Aditi

  • In the VedaSūrya is the all-seeing riser who makes truth manifest; the Ādityas are the “sleepless” watchers (animiṣāḥ) of heaven and earth, upholding ṛta through law, covenant, and right social order. Mitra embodies concord and contracts, Varuṇa the moral-cosmic sovereignty and binding law, Aryaman the noble companionship and rightful belonging, and Aditi the vast, unbounded mother-ground of the Ādityas.
  • Cosmic functionTo illuminate and regulate the world: Sūrya reveals and orders time; the Ādityas guard the cosmic and moral law, oversee right relationships, and ensure safe passage across dangers by maintaining ṛta.
  • Inner significanceAwakening of conscience and clarity: the ‘rising Sun’ is insight that speaks truth; the Ādityas are the inner guardians that steady the mind, align speech with integrity, and lead one across fear, confusion, and ethical peril toward wholeness (svasti).
