Inside Sukta 61

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Sūrya rises as the beautiful, all-seeing eye of Mitra and Varuṇa, extending radiance and discerning human passions.

  2. Development

The hymn expands to their dhāman and mighty power that embraces Heaven and Earth, linking cosmic order to the regulated movement of time (months).

  3. Climax

A sharp moral contrast: those without sacrifice and heroic resolve are driven away from the yajña-intent and forced across a perilous divide—order protects, disorder endangers.

  4. Where it settles

A priestly offering is set before the two gods, followed by an earnest plea: carry us beyond every difficult passage and protect us always with well-being (svasti).

The deity: Mitra–Varuṇa

  • In the VedaA paired Āditya divinity: Mitra embodies alliance, harmony, and right relationship; Varuṇa embodies sovereign oversight, oath, and the binding power of ṛta. Sūrya is portrayed as their radiant eye that rises and beholds all beings and worlds.
  • Cosmic functionThey uphold ṛta by regulating moral and cosmic law, sustaining Heaven and Earth, overseeing time’s order (months/seasonal movement), and protecting the sacrificer while restraining disorder and falsehood.
  • Inner significanceMitra–Varuṇa symbolize the awakened conscience: inner harmony (Mitra) joined to clear moral discernment and self-restraint (Varuṇa). Sūrya as their eye signifies luminous awareness that detects turbulence (manyu) and guides the mind toward truth and right action.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra; Maitrāvaruṇa priestly lineage (Maṇḍala 7 tradition) · Foremost seer of Maṇḍala 7 and archetypal Brahman/priest-sage, celebrated for hymns on ṛta and for the Mitra–Varuṇa theology of moral order and protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because Sūrya’s daily rising and all-pervading light symbolize their vigilant oversight: he “sees” all worlds, and that vision stands for their ability to detect truth, disorder, and human turbulence.

That cosmic order (ṛta) is actively guarded by Mitra and Varuṇa: time moves in an ordered way, moral law is real, and those aligned with sacrifice and truth receive protection and well-being.

It can be recited at dawn or before a fire/water offering as a prayer for clarity, self-restraint, harmonious relationships, and safe passage through difficulties—ending with the request for svasti (lasting well-being).
