Sukta 7.57
Vasiṣṭha (traditional attribution for much of Maṇḍala 7)
Triṣṭubh (probable for RV 7.57; verse appears in 4 pādas of ~11 syllables)
This hymn praises the Maruts as honey-named, force-filled storm-gods who surge in the sacrifice and can shake heaven and earth while releasing hidden sources of abundance. It blends exuberant invocation with a careful plea for forgiveness of human fault, asking that their lightning and wrath be kept away and that their steadfast goodwill protect the worshippers. The sukta culminates in a call for the Maruts to come from every side to strengthen the community’s leaders and guard all with lasting well-being.

Mantra 2

Mantra 5

Mantra 6
Mantra 7

The Maruts are invoked as ‘honey-named’ and delightful, surging through the sacrifice with conscious force and world-shaking energy.
Their cosmic potency is celebrated (shaking the two worlds, swelling hidden fountains), then the hymn turns inward to ethical-ritual caution: human error may offend, so their lightning should be set apart and their goodwill secured.
The appeasement and request for enduring ‘sumati’ (right-minded favor) crystallizes the relationship: power must be harmonized, not merely admired.
A final all-sides invitation asks the praised Maruts to aid the illumined leaders, multiply strength a hundredfold, and guard the people always with svasti (well-being).
madhvo vo nāma mārutam
ṛdhak sā vo maruto didyud astu
yūyaṃ pāta svastibhiḥ sadā naḥ
The Maruts are a shining troop of storm and wind deities, known for thunder, lightning, swift movement, and protective help when properly invoked in the sacrifice.
Because their power is intense: the hymn admits that humans may err, and it seeks forgiveness and a safe, benevolent form of their energy rather than destructive force.
It asks them to come with help from every side, strengthen the community and its leaders, increase strength greatly, and protect everyone continually with well-being (svasti).
