Inside Sukta 57

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The Maruts are invoked as ‘honey-named’ and delightful, surging through the sacrifice with conscious force and world-shaking energy.

  2. Development

Their cosmic potency is celebrated (shaking the two worlds, swelling hidden fountains), then the hymn turns inward to ethical-ritual caution: human error may offend, so their lightning should be set apart and their goodwill secured.

  3. Climax

The appeasement and request for enduring ‘sumati’ (right-minded favor) crystallizes the relationship: power must be harmonized, not merely admired.

  4. Where it settles

A final all-sides invitation asks the praised Maruts to aid the illumined leaders, multiply strength a hundredfold, and guard the people always with svasti (well-being).

The deity: Marutāḥ

  • In the VedaA brilliant, youthful troop of storm-deities—roaring, lightning-bearing, swift and strong—who rejoice in the yajña and move in a shining host with irresistible power.
  • Cosmic functionThey drive the storm and rain, stir the atmosphere, energize the world’s movements, and—often as Indra’s companions—help open the waters and widen prosperity for the clans.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize the surge of prāṇa and heroic will: collective energies that can either disrupt (as lightning/wrath) or protect and uplift when harmonized through right intention and sacrifice.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVāsiṣṭha (Vasiṣṭha-gotra), traditionally linked with the Saptarṣi line · Foremost seer-priest of the Rig Veda’s 7th Maṇḍala, renowned for hymns of powerful ritual speech, royal priesthood (purohita) themes, and the Vasiṣṭha–Viśvāmitra rivalry in later tradition

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maruts are a shining troop of storm and wind deities, known for thunder, lightning, swift movement, and protective help when properly invoked in the sacrifice.

Because their power is intense: the hymn admits that humans may err, and it seeks forgiveness and a safe, benevolent form of their energy rather than destructive force.

It asks them to come with help from every side, strengthen the community and its leaders, increase strength greatly, and protect everyone continually with well-being (svasti).
