Chandas

Triṣṭubh

RV 7.104 is a powerful protective hymn to Indra and Soma that seeks the burning away and driving off of rakṣas, yātu-forces, and inner “devourers” that obstruct right vision and sacrifice. It combines invocation with forceful imperatives—see, awaken, strike—so that truth, clarity, and the yajña-path remain unobstructed. The hymn also frames ethical-spiritual order: false speech and crooked intent fall under Indra’s directed power, while Soma supports the straight and luminous.

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Inside Sukta 104

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A forceful summons to Indra and Soma to blaze and crush the darkness-growing hostile powers, driving them down and away (rakṣas-ubj/ni-arpay).

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies through repeated expulsive commands and moral discernment: rakṣas and false speech are singled out, and Indra’s directed power (prasiti) is invoked as executive judgment.

  3. Climax

The culminating demand for awakened, wide-seeing divine vigilance—paired with the hurling of the slaying force and thunderbolt against yātu-possessed enemies—so the offering’s path is cleared.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by securing divine attention and protection: Indra–Soma ‘look upon us’ and remain awake, establishing a guarded space where truth and sacrifice proceed unhindered.

The deity: Indra–Soma

  • In the VedaTogether they are invoked as a paired power that burns, crushes, and expels rakṣas/yātu while safeguarding the sacrificer.
  • Cosmic functionTo restore and maintain ṛta by shattering chaotic/demonic forces, protecting the yajña, and re-establishing light, truth, and right movement in the worlds.
  • Inner significanceIndra–Soma signifies awakened force (Indra: decisive will and courageous action) united with clarified consciousness/nectar (Soma: illumination, inspiration, truthful speech). Their joint action represents the inner expulsion of fear, deceit, compulsions, and obscuring habits that “feed on” awareness.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha-gotra (Āditya/Manu lineage in later tradition); chief seer of the Vasiṣṭhas in Maṇḍala 7 · One of the foremost ṛṣis of the Rig Veda, renowned as a brahman-seer of spiritual authority whose hymns articulate ṛta (cosmic order), royal consecratory power, and strong protective/warding prayers.

Famous verses

Verse 7.104.1Sets the hymn’s apotropaic tone with vivid imperatives—burn, crush, thrust down—against rakṣas and inner ‘devourers,’ defining the spiritual battle as removal of darkness and obstruction to awakened seeing.Read verse 7.104.1 →

Attributes of the deity

  • Obstruction-breaking (vṛtra-han) power
  • Luminous clarity and inspired vision (Soma)
  • Protective and apotropaic force against rakṣas/yātu
  • Alignment with ṛta and truthful speech
  • Awakening vigilance (jāgṛti) and wide seeing (vi-cakṣ)
  • Thunderbolt/weapon imagery (aśani, vadha)

Also by this seer

  • Primary seer of most of Rig Veda Maṇḍala 7 (many hymns attributed to the Vasiṣṭha family)
  • Hymns to Agni, Indra, Varuṇa-Mitra, and the royal-sacral theme of ṛta and protection (notably within RV 7)
  • Later tradition associates Vasiṣṭha with dharma literature and the Vasiṣṭha corpus (e.g., Vasiṣṭha Dharmasūtra; attribution is traditional, not Rigvedic-critical).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare a clean ritual space; establish Agni and basic ācamana/purification per one’s śrauta/gṛhya custom.
  • Press/offer Soma where applicable (or symbolically honor Soma with a Soma-substitute in later practice).
  • Invoke Indra–Soma with opening verses; state the protective intention (rakṣas/yātu-nivāraṇa, satya-rakṣaṇa).
  • Recite the sukta with emphasis on imperative ‘drive off/burn/crush’ passages, especially the opening and closing sections.
  • Conclude with a sealing prayer for wide seeing and awakened protection; perform śānti and offer remaining oblations.
  • Optionally circumambulate the altar/space and mark boundaries (dik-bandhana) consistent with tradition.

Offerings

  • Soma libation (śrauta context) or Soma-substitute offering
  • Ghṛta (ghee) oblations into Agni
  • Puroḍāśa/caru where prescribed by rite
  • Water and kuśa for purification; protective śānti offerings as customary

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a protective hymn asking Indra and Soma to burn, crush, and drive away hostile forces (rakṣas/yātu) and to keep the sacrifice and the worshipper’s mind clear and safe.

Indra represents decisive power that breaks obstacles, while Soma represents luminous clarity and inspired truth. Together they remove darkness and restore right order (ṛta).

Both. The language targets rakṣas and yātu beings, but it also points to inner ‘devourers’ like confusion, deceitful speech, and obscuring tendencies that block awakened seeing and right action.
