Sukta 10.22

Devata

Indra (invoked through inquiry/absence motif)

Chandas

Likely Triṣṭubh (single verse; requires syllable count confirmation)

This hymn to Indra opens with a striking question of absence—“Where is Indra heard today?”—and turns that doubt into an invocation that calls him forth through inspired speech. It proceeds to ask Indra to defeat hostile, lawless forces (dasyu/dāsa) that oppress the worshippers, and culminates in the Soma-offering invitation: Indra should drink, protect the singer, and bestow abundant, shining wealth and well-being.

Inside Sukta 22

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A probing question: where is Indra heard today—among which people, in which hidden seat—inviting him through the power of speech.

  2. Development

The hymn shifts from inquiry to urgency: Indra is asked to become active, to recognize the worshippers, and to oppose hostile, inhuman, ‘other-law’ forces.

  3. Climax

The decisive plea for Indra to crush the Dāsa/Dasyu’s weapon-force and deception—asserting Indra’s role as the breaker of oppression.

  4. Where it settles

A direct ritual close: “Drink, drink the Soma,” protect the praising singer, and grant great, radiant abundance and wealth.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the heroic soma-drinker, breaker of forts, slayer of Vṛtra, and foremost helper of the Arya worshipper—approached as a powerful ally who responds to praise (giraḥ) and offering.

  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened force of will and luminous courage that breaks inner obstruction—fear, inertia, confusion—and turns inspired speech and aspiration into effective action.

The seer

  • Vimada (traditional attribution for RV 10.20–10.26)Vaimada (family tradition); sometimes linked in later tradition to the Bhṛgu-Aṅgirasa milieu (not uniformly stated) · Associated with late Rigvedic Indra hymns that combine inquiry, urgency, and direct ritual address; noted for the motif of calling a seemingly “unheard” Indra into presence through the power of the hymn.
