Indra-invocation for victory, protection, and the energizing of Soma-powered heroic force
AV 20.31 is an Indra-stuti in Jagatī meter that “harnesses” Indra’s Haris (bay steeds) to bring the Vajrin swiftly to the rite and to the worshipper’s dwelling. By praising Indra as soma-gladdened, iron-strong, and prize-winning, the hymn seeks victory, household vitality, and safe passage over every durita (misfortune and danger). Its power is framed as a protective conveyance: Indra arrives, overcomes hostility, and installs broad life-force (vayas) and winning strength (vāja).
This three-verse Indra-stotra, preserved in Atharvaveda 20 from Rigvedic liturgy, draws Indra across the two worlds to the present Soma-pressing and renews his exhilaration through praise. By making Indra “glad” and fully attentive to this offering, the hymn seeks visible prosperity-signs—secure homestead, cattle-increase, and victorious, sun-witnessed splendour.
This short Indra-stotra (largely Rigvedic in diction and meter) energizes the Soma-offering so Indra may drink, grow in might, and extend his protective aid to the sacrificer’s household. By linking Indra’s exhilaration (mada) with orderly, truth-knowing worshippers in Manu’s dwelling, it aims at prosperity, vitality, and offspring, while also functioning as a shield against threats through Indra’s victorious power.
AV 20.34 is a Rigveda-derived Indra-stuti framed as a protective and victory-winning hymn: it proclaims that triumph, stability, and the turning-back of hostile bands depend upon Indra’s aid. By rehearsing Indra’s archetypal feats—overthrowing foes, refusing concession to aggressors, and remaining “unshaken”—the hymn is used to fortify a patron’s cause, repel enemy pressure, and secure decisive victory.
This Triṣṭubh hymn is a martial Indra-stotra that weaponizes the Vṛtra-slaying myth as an apotropaic force: Indra’s vajra is urged to find the enemy’s “vital spot” and split open obstruction. By praising Indra’s self-ruling greatness and his release of the waters, the sukta also turns victory into prosperity—restoring flow, rain, wealth, and vitality where blockage has prevailed.
AV 20.36 is an Indra-stuti in Triṣṭubh meter, preserved in Atharvaveda Book 20 from a Ṛgvedic source, mobilized in Atharvanic use as a battle-protective and obstacle-breaking charm. It praises Indra as the uniquely worthy recipient of offerings and as the irresistible breaker of firm strongholds, then presses him to arrive swiftly with exclusive aids that enemies cannot divert. The hymn’s power is framed as Indra’s own: thought-swift strategy, native strength, and daring force that splits entrenched opposition and secures victory and safety for the patron.
AV 20.37 is a Triṣṭubh Indra-stuti reprise from the Ṛgveda stream, invoking Indra Vajrahasta as the breaker of enclosures and the slayer of obstructers (vṛtra, namuci, dasyu-forces). By rehearsing Indra’s precedent deeds—shattering forts, overpowering hostile clans, and securing the niveśana (settlement)—the hymn converts praise and offerings into protection, victory, and prosperity for the patron community.
AV 20.38 is an Indra-stuti drawn from Ṛgvedic material, designed to bring Indra to the rite, seat him on the barhis, and secure his favor through intensified communal praise. By foregrounding Soma-offering, priestly legitimacy, and many-voiced laudation (gāthā-singers, hymn-smiths, “Voices”), the hymn functions as a prosperity-and-victory amplifier that aligns the sacrificers with Indra’s winning power.
This short Indra-hymn concentrates power through praise so that Indra’s aid turns exclusively toward the patron’s side and away from rival peoples. By recalling Indra’s archetypal victory—driving the cows forth and thrusting away Vala—it frames present competition as a repeat of the primordial release of wealth, light, and momentum. The stoma itself is portrayed as a rushing wave that quickens Indra’s exhilaration, making victory and gain “flash forth” for the reciter.
AV 20.40 is a short, RV-derived triad that yokes Indraic fearlessness and ritual brilliance to a Pitṛ-facing fire-act in which Svadhā is made to “burn in sequence,” restoring continuity through re-embodiment imagery. The hymn’s power lies in joining victorious, faultless ritual force (makha supported by Indra’s gaṇas) with the transformative agency of Agni and Svadhā, so that the rite becomes both protective and continuity-producing. In three strokes it moves from manifest presence and shared radiance, to an overcoming sacrifice, to the decisive combustion that re-establishes the efficacious “sacrificial Name.”
Indra-invocation for victory, protection, and the energizing of Soma-powered heroic force
Used for securing victory in conflict or competition, strengthening household and patronal protection, removing obstructions, and supporting rite-continuity (including pitṛ-related acts).
They are predominantly Ṛgvedic-style Indra-stutis used atharvanically to summon Indra, strengthen Soma-powered might, and obtain protection and victory by breaking obstructive forces.
Suktas 20.36–20.37 foreground Indra as vajrahasta and enclosure-breaker, while 20.41 compresses the heroic myth-cycle (Dadhīci’s bones) as a template for crushing resistance.
Sukta 20.40 links Indraic brilliance with an ordered fire-act where svadhā is made to ‘burn in sequence,’ reinforcing ritual continuity and ancestral satisfaction as part of household protection.
