RV 7.31 is a Vasiṣṭha hymn to Indra that urges the mighty “Bull” to hear the clan’s pressing need and to protect them from hostile speech, blame, and coercion. It praises Indra as wide-pervading and steadfast in his vratas (laws of action), affirming that true seers craft effective brahman (mantric power) aligned with his order. The hymn functions as both invocation and shield: calling Indra to aid, and anchoring the worshipper’s kratu (will/discernment) in him.
Mantra 1
प्र व इन्द्राय मादनं हर्यश्वाय गायत । सखायः सोमपाव्ने ॥
Sing forth to Indra the rapture that intoxicates—Indra of the tawny steeds—O comrades, to him who drinks the Soma: the power of delight that uplifts consciousness.
Mantra 2
शंसेदुक्थं सुदानव उत द्युक्षं यथा नरः । चकृमा सत्यराधसे ॥
Let us proclaim the hymn to the good giver, and the shining utterance as men do; for we have worked for the one whose bounty is true—whose grace accomplishes the Truth.
Mantra 3
त्वं न इन्द्र वाजयुस्त्वं गव्युः शतक्रतो । त्वं हिरण्ययुर्वसो ॥
You, O Indra, are our seeker and bringer of plenitude; you are our seeker and bringer of the rays (the illumined herds); O hundred-powered, you are our seeker and bringer of the golden light, O wealth-lord.
Mantra 4
वयमिन्द्र त्वायवोऽभि प्र णोनुमो वृषन् । विद्धी त्वस्य नो वसो ॥
We, O Indra, who belong to you, press forward and urge you on, O Bull of power. Take full note of this our need, O lord of abundance, and respond from within the truth of your strength.
Mantra 5
मा नो निदे च वक्तवेऽर्यो रन्धीरराव्णे । त्वे अपि क्रतुर्मम ॥
Let not the hostile claimant bind us over to blame or to the speech of denial; may my will and right discernment rest in you, O Power who is not to be robbed of your plenitude.
Mantra 6
त्वं वर्मासि सप्रथः पुरोयोधश्च वृत्रहन् । त्वया प्रति ब्रुवे युजा ॥
You are the wide-spread armor, the fighter in front, O slayer of Vṛtra; yoked with you as companion-force, I speak my answering word.
Mantra 7
महाँ उतासि यस्य तेऽनु स्वधावरी सहः । मम्नाते इन्द्र रोदसी ॥
Great indeed are you; for your self-lawing force follows you, and by it, O Indra, the two worlds are made to bow and consent.
Mantra 8
तं त्वा मरुत्वती परि भुवद्वाणी सयावरी । नक्षमाणा सह द्युभिः ॥
Around you moves the word full of the Maruts, wide-travelling; growing in its reach together with the lights, it encompasses you in the act of manifestation.
Mantra 9
ऊर्ध्वासस्त्वान्विन्दवो भुवन्दस्ममुप द्यवि । सं ते नमन्त कृष्टयः ॥
The uplifted soma-drops follow you, O wondrous one, rising toward the luminous heaven; the peoples in us bow together to you in a single consent.
Mantra 10
प्र वो महे महिवृधे भरध्वं प्रचेतसे प्र सुमतिं कृणुध्वम् । विशः पूर्वीः प्र चरा चर्षणिप्राः ॥
Bring forward your offering to the Great, the increaser of greatness; fashion forward the good mind for the One of clear seeing. Let the ancient peoples move forward—those who are filled with the power to lead humanity.
Mantra 11
उरुव्यचसे महिने सुवृक्तिमिन्द्राय ब्रह्म जनयन्त विप्राः । तस्य व्रतानि न मिनन्ति धीराः ॥
For the wide-pervading, the mighty, the seers bring forth the well-shaped word as a mantric power for Indra; his laws of working the steadfast thinkers do not violate.
Mantra 12
इन्द्रं वाणीरनुत्तमन्युमेव सत्रा राजानं दधिरे सहध्यै । हर्यश्वाय बर्हया समापीन् ॥
The voices set Indra—of unsurpassed force of ardor—as the king, for a victorious companionship; for him of tawny steeds, they spread the seat and gather the plenitudes.
It asks Indra to notice the worshippers’ need, grant strength and abundance, and protect them—especially from hostility, blame, and harmful or denying speech.
Kratu here is the power of right intention and discernment—steady will guided by insight. The hymn prays that this inner capacity may rest in Indra, so it becomes strong and protected.
It highlights that Indra’s ways of working are reliable and not to be violated. The hymn teaches that effective prayer and success come when one’s speech and conduct align with that divine order.
