Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya) tradition (Sukta 6.68).
Indra–Varuṇa (dual).
Triṣṭubh.
This Triṣṭubh hymn of Bharadvāja’s line invokes the paired powers Indra–Varuṇa as joint guardians of both victorious force and righteous order. It presents the sacrifice as already prepared and “turned toward” them, asking for iṣ (impulsion), sumná (grace), protection in conflicts, and widening prosperity (rayi). The hymn repeatedly fuses Indra’s obstruction-slaying might with Varuṇa’s ṛta-based sovereignty, making success meaningful only when aligned with Truth.
Mantra 1
श्रुष्टी वां यज्ञ उद्यतः सजोषा मनुष्वद्वृक्तबर्हिषो यजध्यै । आ य इन्द्रावरुणाविषे अद्य महे सुम्नाय मह आववर्तत् ॥
Ready is the sacrifice for you, harmonious in its movement, with the strewn seat prepared in the human way, to adore: it has turned toward you, O Indra and Varuṇa, today for the great impulsion and for the great delight of grace.
Mantra 2
ता हि श्रेष्ठा देवताता तुजा शूराणां शविष्ठा ता हि भूतम् । मघोनां मंहिष्ठा तुविशुष्म ऋतेन वृत्रतुरा सर्वसेना ॥
These two are indeed the best as divine parents, swift, most forceful among the heroic energies. They are the greatest wideners for the givers, of vast impelling power; by the Truth they are slayers of obstruction, possessing every host of force.
Mantra 3
ता गृणीहि नमस्येभिः शूषैः सुम्नेभिरिन्द्रावरुणा चकाना । वज्रेणान्यः शवसा हन्ति वृत्रं सिषक्त्यन्यो वृजनेषु विप्रः ॥
Sing to those two, Indra and Varuṇa, with acts of reverence, with energies and happy widenesses, delighting in the offering. One smites the obstruction with the thunderbolt by sheer force; the other, the seer, establishes and binds the right workings in the fields of action.
Mantra 4
ग्नाश्च यन्नरश्च वावृधन्त विश्वे देवासो नरां स्वगूर्ताः । प्रैभ्य इन्द्रावरुणा महित्वा द्यौश्च पृथिवि भूतमुर्वी ॥
When the women-powers and the man-powers increase, all the gods, well-invoked, foster the human being. From them, O Indra and Varuṇa, by your greatness, Heaven and Earth become wide—widened in us as the field for the divine life.
Mantra 5
स इत्सुदानुः स्ववाँ ऋतावेन्द्रा यो वां वरुण दाशति त्मन् । इषा स द्विषस्तरेद्दास्वान्वंसद्रयिं रयिवतश्च जनान् ॥
He indeed is the good-giver, rich in his own strength and a keeper of the Truth—O Indra—who offers to you two, O Varuṇa, from his inmost self. By the divine impulsion he crosses beyond the hostile forces; giving, he wins the plenitude (rayi) and brings increase also to those who are full of that light-wealth.
Mantra 6
यं युवं दाश्वध्वराय देवा रयिं धत्थो वसुमन्तं पुरुक्षुम् । अस्मे स इन्द्रावरुणावपि ष्यात्प्र यो भनक्ति वनुषामशस्तीः ॥
The plenitude you two set for the giver of the offering—O gods—rich in substance and extending far, may that come also to us, O Indra and Varuṇa. Forward may he go who breaks apart the ill-sayings of the seekers—who refuses the falsehood that diminishes the soul’s striving.
Mantra 7
उत नः सुत्रात्रो देवगोपाः सूरिभ्य इन्द्रावरुणा रयिः ष्यात् । येषां शुष्मः पृतनासु साह्वान्प्र सद्यो द्युम्ना तिरते ततुरिः ॥
And for us, O Indra and Varuṇa—good protectors, guardians of the divine—may there be rayi for the luminous leaders. For those whose vehemence is victorious in the battles, their swift conquering at once carries the splendors across—bringing the light through conflict into fulfilled manifestation.
Mantra 8
नू न इन्द्रावरुणा गृणाना पृङ्क्तं रयिं सौश्रवसाय देवा । इत्था गृणन्तो महिनस्य शर्धोऽपो न नावा दुरिता तरेम ॥
Now, O Indra and Varuṇa, as we voice you in the chant, blend into us the rayi—an opulence of being that becomes good hearing and true renown in the soul, O gods. Thus praising, a company under the Greatness, may we cross beyond the difficult passages, as over waters by a boat.
Mantra 9
प्र सम्राजे बृहते मन्म नु प्रियमर्च देवाय वरुणाय सप्रथः । अयं य उर्वी महिना महिव्रतः क्रत्वा विभात्यजरो न शोचिषा ॥
Bring forward now the beloved thought and offer it to Varuṇa, the divine Samrāj, the Wide and Great. He who by greatness upholds the broad world, firm in the vast vow, shines out by the power of his will, ageless as a flame in its radiance.
Mantra 10
इन्द्रावरुणा सुतपाविमं सुतं सोमं पिबतं मद्यं धृतव्रता । युवो रथो अध्वरं देववीतये प्रति स्वसरमुप याति पीतये ॥
O Indra and Varuṇa, drinkers of the pressed delight, drink this pressed Soma, the rapture-giving. O keepers of the steadfast law, your chariot comes near to the rite for the gods’ enjoyment, approaching the call, to drink.
Mantra 11
इन्द्रावरुणा मधुमत्तमस्य वृष्णः सोमस्य वृषणा वृषेथाम् । इदं वामन्धः परिषिक्तमस्मे आसद्यास्मिन्बर्हिषि मादयेथाम् ॥
O Indra and Varuṇa, two Bulls, grow strong with the most honeyed Soma. This pressed essence is poured all around for you in us; sit down upon this seat of offering and take your delight.
The hymn pairs Indra’s conquering strength with Varuṇa’s rule of ṛta (truth and order). It asks for success that is both powerful and rightly governed.
It asks for iṣ (driving impulse), sumná (grace/favor), protection in struggles, and rayi (prosperity), with victory achieved through alignment with ṛta.
Alongside mythic foes, it also points to anything that blocks life—fear, disorder, drought, or inner resistance. Indra–Varuṇa are praised for removing such obstruction through truth-based power.
