Sukta 61

Mantra 1

इयमददाद्रभसमृणच्युतं दिवोदासं वध्र्यश्वाय दाशुषे । या शश्वन्तमाचखादावसं पणिं ता ते दात्राणि तविषा सरस्वति ॥

She gave the impetuous, debt-releasing strength to Divodāsa, to Vadhryaśva who offers. She who struck down the ever-enduring Paṇi, the niggard hoarder of the gain—those are your gifts of force, O Sarasvatī.

Mantra 2

इयं शुष्मेभिर्बिसखा इवारुजत्सानु गिरीणां तविषेभिरूर्मिभिः । पारावतघ्नीमवसे सुवृक्तिभिः सरस्वतीमा विवासेम धीतिभिः ॥

She with her strengths broke through like one tearing up lotus-stalks; with her mighty waves she burst the ridges of the mountains. The slayer of what is ‘far-off’ (the estranging darkness), for our help—with good utterances and with inspired thoughts we would draw Sarasvatī near and make her dwell with us.

Mantra 3

सरस्वति देवनिदो नि बर्हय प्रजां विश्वस्य बृसयस्य मायिनः । उत क्षितिभ्योऽवनीरविन्दो विषमेभ्यो अस्रवो वाजिनीवति ॥

O Sarasvatī, thrust down the revilers of the divine; shatter the progeny and increase of the universal deceiver. And for the peoples you found the paths; from the hard places you made the streams to flow, O she of victorious force.

Mantra 4

प्र णो देवी सरस्वती वाजेभिर्वाजिनीवती । धीनामवित्र्यवतु ॥

Forward for us may the goddess Sarasvatī, rich in vāja-powers, move; she the bearer of victorious force—may she protect and foster our inspirations (dhī).

Mantra 5

यस्त्वा देवि सरस्वत्युपब्रूते धने हिते । इन्द्रं न वृत्रतूर्ये ॥

Whoever, O देवी Sarasvatī, calls you near for the sake of the true gain—like Indra in the overcoming of Vṛtra, so (you become) his victorious aid in the battle for light.

Mantra 6

त्वं देवि सरस्वत्यवा वाजेषु वाजिनि । रदा पूषेव नः सनिम् ॥

You, O goddess Sarasvatī, in the battles for vāja, O bearer of force, give to us the winning—like Pūṣan, grant us the secure gain and right finding.

Mantra 7

उत स्या नः सरस्वती घोरा हिरण्यवर्तनिः । वृत्रघ्नी वष्टि सुष्टुतिम् ॥

And she, Sarasvatī for us—terrible (to the obstructors), with golden course— the slayer of Vṛtra, desires and accepts the good hymn of praise.

Mantra 8

यस्या अनन्तो अह्रुतस्त्वेषश्चरिष्णुरर्णवः । अमश्चरति रोरुवत् ॥

She whose oceanic movement is without end—unhindered, impetuous, ever-coursing—whose force goes on in a roaring surge: may that Sarasvatī’s power of luminous flow act in us.

Mantra 9

सा नो विश्वा अति द्विषः स्वसॄरन्या ऋतावरी । अतन्नहेव सूर्यः ॥

May she, our sister who bears the Truth, carry us beyond all hatreds, beyond every opposing force—like the Sun that stretches out the days and dispels the constriction.

Mantra 10

उत नः प्रिया प्रियासु सप्तस्वसा सुजुष्टा । सरस्वती स्तोम्या भूत् ॥

And may Sarasvatī be dear to us among all dear powers—she of seven sister-streams, perfectly consenting—becoming worthy of our hymns as she awakens the harmonies of the being.

Mantra 11

आपप्रुषी पार्थिवान्युरु रजो अन्तरिक्षम् । सरस्वती निदस्पातु ॥

She who has filled the earthly forms and the wide mid-region—may Sarasvatī guard us from the voice of negation and the striking of hostile speech.

Mantra 12

त्रिषधस्था सप्तधातुः पञ्च जाता वर्धयन्ती । वाजेवाजे हव्या भूत् ॥

Established in the three seats, forming the sevenfold order, born in the fivefold becoming, she who increases our growth—may she become our invoked Power in every gaining of plenitude of force.

Mantra 13

प्र या महिम्ना महिनासु चेकिते द्युम्नेभिरन्या अपसामपस्तमा । रथ इव बृहती विभ्वने कृतोपस्तुत्या चिकितुषा सरस्वती ॥

She who by her greatness is manifest among the great, by her shining powers surpassing the others—most effective in works: Sarasvatī, vast like a chariot in its driving, fashioned for wide becoming, to be praised by those who know.

Mantra 14

सरस्वत्यभि नो नेषि वस्यो माप स्फरीः पयसा मा न आ धक् । जुषस्व नः सख्या वेश्या च मा त्वत्क्षेत्राण्यरणानि गन्म ॥

O Sarasvatī, lead us toward the better plenitude; do not drive us away—do not strike us with your nourishing flow. Accept our friendship and our nearness; let us not go from you to barren fields devoid of the living current.
