This hymn praises Savitṛ as the divine Impeller who rises and sets the worlds in motion, upholding ṛta (cosmic order) and distributing the gods’ and humans’ share of prosperity. It describes his steady, conquering presence that removes distortion and brings the “eternal waters” in accordance with his divine ordinance. The seer finally asks Savitṛ to grant desirable abundance from heaven, waters, and earth for the peace and increase of the singers.

Mantra 1

उदु ष्य देवः सविता सवाय शश्वत्तमं तदपा वह्निरस्थात् । नूनं देवेभ्यो वि हि धाति रत्नमथाभजद्वीतिहोत्रं स्वस्तौ ॥

Up rises that god Savitṛ for the impulsion; the ever-lasting working—like a carrier of waters—has taken its stand. Now he distributes the treasure to the gods; then he apportions the well-invited offering in the movement of well-being.

Mantra 2

विश्वस्य हि श्रुष्टये देव ऊर्ध्वः प्र बाहवा पृथुपाणिः सिसर्ति । आपश्चिदस्य व्रत आ निमृग्रा अयं चिद्वातो रमते परिज्मन् ॥

For the hearing and response of all, the god rises upward; wide-handed, he stretches forth his arms. Even the waters submit to his law and take their appointed forms; even this wind moves in delight around its course.

Mantra 3

आशुभिश्चिद्यान्वि मुचाति नूनमरीरमदतमानं चिदेतोः । अह्यर्षूणां चिन्न्ययाँ अविष्यामनु व्रतं सवितुर्मोक्यागात् ॥

Even the swift courses he now releases and sets free; he has made to move even what was not moving in its going. Even the serpent-powers he has led down and rendered harmless; following the law of Savitṛ, there comes the liberating release.

Mantra 4

पुनः समव्यद्विततं वयन्ती मध्या कर्तोर्न्यधाच्छक्म धीरः । उत्संहायास्थाद्व्यृतूँरदर्धररमतिः सविता देव आगात् ॥

Again she weaves the web that is spread out; in the middle of the work the strong seer set the firm support. Rising, he gathered and set apart the seasons in their right measures; Savitṛ the god came with his powers of effective will.

Mantra 5

नानौकांसि दुर्यो विश्वमायुर्वि तिष्ठते प्रभवः शोको अग्नेः । ज्येष्ठं माता सूनवे भागमाधादन्वस्य केतमिषितं सवित्रा ॥

In many dwelling-places the whole life is set in its stations; the out-bursting flame of Agni stands manifest. The Mother has placed the eldest portion for the Son; following his sign, impelled by Savitṛ, the being moves in the ordained direction.

Mantra 6

समाववर्ति विष्ठितो जिगीषुर्विश्वेषां कामश्चरताममाभूत् । शश्वाँ अपो विकृतं हित्व्यागादनु व्रतं सवितुर्दैव्यस्य ॥

He has turned and returned, standing firm, seeking to conquer; he became the desire within all that moves. Leaving behind the distorted formations, he has come with the eternal waters, following the divine law of Savitṛ.

Mantra 7

त्वया हितमप्यमप्सु भागं धन्वान्वा मृगयसो वि तस्थुः । वनानि विभ्यो नकिरस्य तानि व्रता देवस्य सवितुर्मिनन्ति ॥

By you is set the hidden portion in the waters; therefore the seekers range out across the dry land. The forests—none can violate them; the laws of Savitṛ the god do not admit diminution.

Mantra 8

याद्राध्यं वरुणो योनिमप्यमनिशितं निमिषि जर्भुराणः । विश्वो मार्ताण्डो व्रजमा पशुर्गात्स्थशो जन्मानि सविता व्याकः ॥

That hidden womb in the waters which Varuṇa has made ready—unfailing in its blink—ceaselessly working: to it the universal Mārtāṇḍa, the Sun as the herd, has come to the fold. Savitṛ has set out and made distinct the births in their several stations.

Mantra 9

न यस्येन्द्रो वरुणो न मित्रो व्रतमर्यमा न मिनन्ति रुद्रः । नारातयस्तमिदं स्वस्ति हुवे देवं सवितारं नमोभिः ॥

He whose law of right becoming is not diminished by Indra, nor by Varuṇa, nor by Mitra, nor by Aryaman, nor even by Rudra—nor can the hostile powers assail it: that god Savitṛ I invoke here for our well-being, with acts of reverence.

Mantra 10

भगं धियं वाजयन्तः पुरंधिं नराशंसो ग्नास्पतिर्नो अव्याः । आये वामस्य संगथे रयीणां प्रिया देवस्य सवितुः स्याम ॥

May Narāśaṃsa and the Lord of inspired utterance guard us, as we make our thought a bearer of plenitude—seeking Bhaga and Purandhi; and in the meeting-place of the riches of delight may we become dear to Savitṛ, the god.

Mantra 11

अस्मभ्यं तद्दिवो अद्भ्यः पृथिव्यास्त्वया दत्तं काम्यं राध आ गात् । शं यत्स्तोतृभ्य आपये भवात्युरुशंसाय सवितर्जरित्रे ॥

To us may that desirable plenitude come—given by you from heaven, from the waters, from the earth; and may it be for peace and increase to the singers, for the wide-praised one, O Savitṛ, for the praising soul.

Frequently Asked Questions

Savitṛ is the divine “Impeller” who awakens and sets all beings in motion, guiding them by cosmic law (ṛta/vrata) and granting auspicious well-being and prosperity.

That right movement in life and ritual comes from Savitṛ’s impulse: he corrects what is distorted, maintains order, and distributes the proper share of blessings to gods and humans.
