Mantra 1

कदा वसो स्तोत्रं हर्यत आव श्मशा रुधद्वाः । दीर्घं सुतं वाताप्याय ॥

When, O Vasu, will the hymn come to thy delight—when the mouth holds back the out-breath? (Then) for the long-pressed Soma, for the strengthening by the wind-breath.

हरी यस्य सुयुजा विव्रता वेरर्वन्तानु शेपा । उभा रजी न केशिना पतिर्दन् ॥

Whose two tawny steeds are well-yoked, wide-ranging, bringing the prize, following the rein—he holds the two world-tracks as a lord, like the long-haired one.

Mantra 3

अप योरिन्द्रः पापज आ मर्तो न शश्रमाणो बिभीवान् । शुभे यद्युयुजे तविषीवान् ॥

Indra has driven away the hostile ones; like a mortal who toils, yet fearing not. When the mighty one yoked himself to the luminous good, he moved forward.

सचायोरिन्द्रश्चर्कृष आँ उपानसः सपर्यन् । नदयोर्विव्रतयोः शूर इन्द्रः ॥

Indra labours in union with the two (powers), serving as one who draws near; the heroic Indra moves with the two wide-ranging streams.

Mantra 5

अधि यस्तस्थौ केशवन्ता व्यचस्वन्ता न पुष्ट्यै । वनोति शिप्राभ्यां शिप्रिणीवान् ॥

He who has taken his stand above the long-maned, wide-spreading (powers) for the increase—he wins by his two ‘śiprā’ (jaw/cheek powers), the strong-jawed one.

प्रास्तौदृष्वौजा ऋष्वेभिस्ततक्ष शूरः शवसा । ऋभुर्न क्रतुभिर्मातरिश्वा ॥

The strong in lofty power has praised; the hero has fashioned with might, with the lofty ones—like Ṛbhu by his wills, like Mātariśvan.

Mantra 7

वज्रं यश्चक्रे सुहनाय दस्यवे हिरीमशो हिरीमान् । अरुतहनुरद्भुतं न रजः ॥

He who forged the vajra (the irresistible will-force) for the easy slaying of the Dasyu (the dark obstructer), he—golden-maned, rich in luminous energies—breaks the jaws of resistance, a marvel like the vast expanse.

अव नो वृजिना शिशीह्यृचा वनेमानृचः । नाब्रह्मा यज्ञ ऋधग्जोषति त्वे ॥

Sharpen away from us the crookedness of false movement; by the true utterance may we win, not being without the Word. Let not the sacrifice, lacking the brahman-force, take delight apart from thee.

ऊर्ध्वा यत्ते त्रेतिनी भूद्यज्ञस्य धूर्षु सद्मन् । सजूर्नावं स्वयशसं सचायोः ॥

When thy triple-strand rose upright in the seat, upon the yoke-poles of the sacrifice, then together with the two (powers) thou didst join the self-glorious boat—so the passage is made.

श्रिये ते पृश्निरुपसेचनी भूच्छ्रिये दर्विररेपाः । यया स्वे पात्रे सिञ्चस उत् ॥

For thy increase of splendour may the dappled (abundance) become the pouring-stream; for thy increase may the ladle be stainless—by which thou pourest out into thine own vessel.

शतं वा यदसुर्य प्रति त्वा सुमित्र इत्थास्तौद्दुर्मित्र इत्थास्तौत् । आवो यद्दस्युहत्ये कुत्सपुत्रं प्रावो यद्दस्युहत्ये कुत्सवत्सम् ॥

Whether a hundred times in the Asurya struggle the well-ally thus praised thee, and the ill-ally thus praised thee—thou didst protect, in the slaying of the Dasyu, Kutsaputra; thou didst lead forth, in the slaying of the Dasyu, Kutsavatsa.
