Mantra 1
प्रतिसरो मणिः। अयं प्रतिसरो मणिर्वीरो वीराय बध्यते । वीर्यऽवान्त्सपत्नहा शूरवीरः परिपाणः सुमङ्गलः
A counter-charm is the amulet. This counter-charm amulet, heroic, is bound upon the hero: full of manly might, a slayer of rivals, a bold champion, guarding on every side, most auspicious.
Mantra 2
अयं मणिः सपत्नहा सुवीरः सहस्वान् वाजी सहमान उग्रः । प्रत्यक् कृत्या दूषयन्नेति वीरः
This amulet is a slayer of rivals, rich in heroes; mighty, prize-winning, conquering, fierce. Turning back the witchcraft, spoiling it, the hero goes forth.
Mantra 3
अनेनेन्द्रो मणिना वृत्रमहन्ननेनासुरान् पराभावयन्मनीषी। अनेनाजयद् द्यावापृथिवी उभे इमे अनेनाजयत् प्रदिशश्चतस्रः
With this amulet Indra smote Vṛtra; with this the wise one routed the Asuras. With this he won these two, Heaven and Earth; with this he won the four quarters of space.
Mantra 4
अयं स्राक्त्यो मणिः प्रतीवर्तः प्रतिसरः । ओजस्वान् विमृधो वशी सो अस्मान् पातु सर्वतः
This suspended amulet is a turner-back, a counter-charm: full of vital might, dispelling assaults, controlling. May it protect us from every side.
Mantra 5
तदग्निराह तदु सोम आह बृहस्पतिः सविता तदिन्द्रः । ते मे देवाः पुरोहिताः प्रतीचीः कृत्याः प्रतिसरैरजन्तु
So spake Agni; so indeed spake Soma; Bṛhaspati, Savitar—so spake Indra. Let those Gods, set before me as my fore-priests, with counter-charms drive back the witchcrafts returning upon their way.
Mantra 6
अन्तर्दधे द्यावापृथिवी उताहरुत सूर्यम्। ते मे देवाः पुरोहिताः प्रतीचीः कृत्याः प्रतिसरैरजन्तु
He set within as a covering Heaven and Earth, and Day, and the Sun. Let those Gods, set before me as my fore-priests, with counter-charms drive back the witchcrafts turned in return.
Mantra 7
ये स्राक्त्यं मणिं जना वर्माणि कृण्वते । सूर्य इव दिवमारुह्य वि कृत्या बाधते वशी
They who, with the Sṛāktya amulet, make for themselves armours of defence—he, like the Sun ascending heaven, as a masterful lord, drives the Kṛtyā-spell away.
Mantra 8
स्राक्त्येन मणिन ऋषिणेव मनीषिणा । अजैषं सर्वाः पृतना वि मृधो हन्मि रक्षसः
With the Sṛāktya amulet, as with a wise Ṛṣi, I have conquered all battles; I smite apart the assaults, I strike down the Rākṣasas.
Mantra 9
याः कृत्या आङ्गिरसीर्याः कृत्या आसुरीर्याः । कृत्याः स्वयंकृता या उ चान्येभिराभृताः । उभयीस्ताः परा यन्तु परावतो नवतिं नाव्या३अति
What Kṛtyās be of Āṅgirasa sort, what Kṛtyās be Asuric; what Kṛtyās are self-wrought, and what indeed are brought on by others—both kinds, let them depart away, to the far distance, ninety (leagues) beyond, over by boat.
Mantra 10
अस्मै मणिं वर्म बध्नन्तु देवा इन्द्रो विष्णुः सविता रुद्रो अग्निः । प्रजापतिः परमेष्ठी विराड् वैश्वानर ऋषयश्च सर्वे
For him let the Gods bind on the amulet as armour—Indra, Viṣṇu, Savitar, Rudra, Agni; Prajāpati, Parameṣṭhin, Virāj, Vaiśvānara, and all the Ṛṣis.
Mantra 11
उत्तमो अस्योषधीनामनड्वान् जगतामिव व्याघ्रः श्वपदामिव । यमैच्छामाविदाम तं प्रतिस्पाशनमन्तितम्
Highest is he among these medicines—like a bull among moving creatures, like a tiger among the beasts of prey. Him whom we sought we have found: that nearest counter-binding, most immediate defence.
Mantra 12
स इद् व्याघ्रो भवत्यथो सिंहो अथो वृषा । अथो सपत्नकर्शनो यो बिभर्तीमं मणिम्
He verily becometh a tiger, and also a lion, and also a bull; yea, a dragger-down of rivals is he who beareth this amulet.
Mantra 13
नैनं घ्नन्त्यप्सरसो न गन्धर्वा न मर्त्याः । सर्वा दिशो वि राजति यो बिभर्तीमं मणिम्
Not Apsarases smite him, nor Gandharvas, nor mortal men: over all the quarters he shineth forth, who beareth this amulet.
Mantra 14
कश्यपस्त्वामसृजत कश्यपस्त्वा समैरयत्। अबिभस्त्वेन्द्रो मानुषे बिभ्रत् संश्रेषिणेऽजयत्। मणिं सहस्रवीर्यं वर्म देवा अकृण्वत
Kaśyapa created thee; Kaśyapa wholly set thee in motion. Indra bore thee among men, and, bearing, conquered the close-clinging foe. The gods made the amulet, of thousandfold might, a coat of mail.
Mantra 15
यस्त्वा कृत्याभिर्यस्त्वा दीक्षाभिर्यज्ञैर्यस्त्वा जिघांसति । प्रत्यक् त्वमिन्द्र तं जहि वज्रेण शतपर्वणा
Whoso with kṛtyā-spells, whoso with consecrations, with sacrifices, whoso seeketh to slay thee—do thou, O Indra, smite him back again with thy hundred-jointed bolt.
Mantra 16
अयमिद् वै प्रतीवर्त ओजस्वान् संजयो मणिः । प्रजां धनं च रक्षतु परिपाणः सुमङ्गलः
This, verily, is the turning-back, the strong, the all-conquering amulet: let it guard our offspring and our wealth, an all-around protector, of happiest auspice.
Mantra 17
असपत्नं नो अधरादसपत्नं न उत्तरात्। इन्द्रासपत्नं नः पश्चाज्ज्योतिः शूर पुरस्कृधि
Rival-less for us from below, rival-less for us from above. O Indra, make us rival-less from behind; O Hero, set Light in front of us.
Mantra 18
वर्म मे द्यावापृथिवी वर्माहर्वर्म सूर्यः । वर्म म इन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च वर्म धाता दधातु मे
Armor for me be Heaven and Earth; armor be Day, armor the Sun. Armor for me be Indra and Agni; let Dhātṛ set armor upon me.
Mantra 19
ऐन्द्राग्नं वर्म बहुलं यदुग्रं विश्वे देवा नाति विध्यन्ति सर्वे । तन्मे तन्वं त्रायतां सर्वतो बृहदायुष्मां जरदष्टिर्यथासानि
The Indra-and-Agni armor—thick-set, fierce—which all the Gods together cannot pierce through: let that protect my body from every side, that I may be broad in life, life-possessed, a beholder of old age, even so may I be.
Mantra 20
आ मारुक्षद् देवमणिर्मह्या अरिष्टतातये । इमं मेथिमभिसंविशध्वं तनूपानं त्रिवरूथमोजसे
Hither hath the divine Jewel mounted upon me for unhurt estate. Enter ye into this post—body-guarding, triple-sheltered—for strength.
Mantra 21
अस्मिन्निन्द्रो नि दधातु नृम्णमिमं देवासो अभिसंविशध्वम्। दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदायायुष्मान् जरदष्टिर्यथासत्
In this let Indra set down manly might; into this, O Gods, enter and abide. For long life, for a hundred autumns—life-possessed, a beholder of old age—so may he be.
Mantra 22
स्वस्तिदा विशां पतिर्वृत्रहा विमृधो वशी। इन्द्रो बध्नातु ते मणिं जिगीवाँ अपराजितः सोमपा अभयङ्करो वृषा । स त्वा रक्षतु सर्वतो दिवा नक्तं च विश्वतः
The Giver of welfare, the Lord of the folk, the Vṛtra-slayer, controller of assailants—let Indra bind upon thee the amulet: victorious, unconquered, Soma-drinking, bull-like, a maker of fearlessness. May he guard thee from every side, by day and by night, from all quarters.
It is a protective amulet (often tied with a cord) treated as a personified counter-charm that turns back harm and surrounds the wearer with auspicious protection.
Victory over rivals and assailants, fearlessness, and steady protection of one’s household goods—especially progeny and wealth—by day and by night from all directions.
Indra is the archetypal victor and protector; the hymn asks him to ‘bind’ the amulet so its protection becomes unconquered and universally effective against hostile forces.
