  • पदच्छेदः: हरयः | धूमकेतवः | वातजूताः | उप | द्यवि | यतन्ते | वृथक् | अग्नयः । 1) ‘अग्नयः’ is the regular nom.pl. of अग्नि-. 2) ‘द्यवि’ is the Vedic loc.sg. of द्यौ- (heaven/sky), used with the directional particle ‘उप’. 3) ‘वातजूताः’ is a karmadhāraya/tatpuruṣa compound ‘vātá-’ + ‘jūtá-’ (PPP from √जु/जव्), agreeing with the nominative plural subjects. 4) Accent marks in the saṃhitā text are retained as given

Outer meaning

Tawny flames with smoke as their banner, driven by the wind, strive upward toward heaven; the many fires labor separately.

Inner meaning

Multiple ‘agnis’ are the many workings of the one divine Will in different parts of the being—mental, vital, physical, psychic—each striving (yatante) to ascend toward the higher consciousness (dyu). Smoke-banner (dhūmaketu) is the sign of effort: aspiration rising but still mixed with obscurity. Wind-driven (vātajūtāḥ) indicates prāṇa’s role: breath/energy currents can propel the ascent when aligned, or scatter it when restless. The verse acknowledges plurality and unevenness: each fire works “vṛthak” (in its own way), yet all are oriented upward.

Universal truth

Growth is often plural and uneven: different parts of the nature kindle at different rates, but all can be turned toward ascent when the life-force supports the upward movement.

Themes

ascent, many fires/many powers, aspiration, heavenward movement
