في الشدّة كما في الرخاء، هو ملجؤك، يا بريئًا من العيب. فهذا هو الدَّرما لأهل الصلاح في هذا العالم: أن يظلّ المرء خاضعًا للأخ الأكبر.
Rama is your refuge in times of adversity or prosperity, O sinless one! To beobedient to the eldest (brother) is the duty of virtuous men in this world.
The dharma of the good is steadfast obedience to the elder; the elder brother is refuge in both adversity and prosperity.
Daily practice of humility and alignment with rightful guidance; supports sevā-bhāva and discipline.
The ‘elder’ as gati parallels the higher principle guiding the lower faculties; aligning with the higher (buddhi/ātman) is dharma in all states (vyasana/samṛddhi).
Hierarchy of guidance resonates with the chariot metaphor: the guiding principle must be followed for safe passage.
Valmiki Ramayana 2.20-2.23 (Lakshmana’s insistence on following Rama); Mahābhārata: reverence to elders as dharma (e.g., Śānti/Anuśāsana themes); Manusmṛti and dharmaśāstra motifs: jyeṣṭha-sevā and kula-dharma
Dharmaśāstric ideal of elder-obedience as satām ācāra
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: repeated framing of Rama as dharma’s embodiment and Lakshmana as his devoted follower
Anuṣṭup
Solemn
Steady madhyama with firm cadence on ‘satāṃ dharmaḥ’
Dharma is defined as loyal obedience to the elder brother and taking refuge in righteousness (Rāma) in both suffering and success.
As preparations for departure are underway, Sumitrā instructs Lakṣmaṇa on how to orient his life around Rāma’s leadership.
Filial-brotherly devotion and humility: Lakṣmaṇa is urged to serve and follow the rightful elder.
