Sukta 2

Rishi: Traditionally connected with Vrātya material (ancillary attributions vary)

Devata: Dik (Direction), especially Prācī (East), as ordering power

Chandas: Prose/anuṣṭubh-like cadence (Atharvanic narrative style)

Inside Sukta 2

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens in terse Atharvanic narrative: the figure rises and proceeds, explicitly tracking movement with reference to a quarter (notably Prācī/East).

  2. What it asks

That the subject’s movement through the quarters be auspicious, authorized, and productive—transforming mobility into ordered advance and recognized standing.

  3. Where its power lies

Efficacy is grounded in ‘knowing thus’ (ya evaṃ veda): correct ritual knowledge of the directional order compels the benefits of alignment and social fruition.

  4. How it closes

The conclusion seals the rite with personified outcomes—Kīrti and Yaśas go before and come to the knower—asserting precedence and enduring public renown.

Kind of hymn

Social-ritual narrative (Vrātya cycle) / Paustika orientation

What it is for

Auspiciously orders the subject in the cosmos and community by directional alignment, producing sanctioned progress, stability, and the social rewards of renown and acknowledged glory.

Who it is for

Ritual specialists and patrons engaging Vrātya-cycle liturgy; communities seeking to integrate/authorize a leader, initiate, or liminal group-member through ordered orientation and public recognition.

Also used as

  • Shantika
  • Rājakarma (status/precedence)
  • Social-ritual narrative (Vrātya cycle)

The deity

The Directions are personified cosmic-social regulators: they establish correct placement, movement, and hierarchy in space, which in Vedic thought also stabilizes ritual and social order. Prācī (East) is the normative quarter of beginnings and auspicious emergence; Kīrti (Fame) and Yaśas (Glory) represent the social fruit of that ordered emergence.

Powers of the deity

  • Grants auspicious orientation and right placement
  • Legitimates movement and transition (from liminal to ordered status)
  • Confers increase and ascent through alignment with quarters (especially East/North)
  • Secures precedence, reputation, and public acclaim (Kīrti/Yaśas)

Why the deity is called

To make the Vrātya’s rising and procession through space ritually valid and socially intelligible, culminating in the acquisition of recognized fame and glory for the one who ‘thus knows’ (ya evaṃ veda).

The seer

  • Vrātya (collective/anonymous seer-voice; ancillary attributions vary in the tradition)Angiras. Social-ritual charms of legitimation: integrating liminal figures, securing auspicious orientation, status, precedence, and public renown (paustika within narrative liturgy).

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 15.1
  • AV 15.3
  • AV 15.4

Preparing for the rite

  • Choose a ritually clean, open space with clear awareness of the quarters (mark East/North).
  • Seat/stand the subject facing East; establish silence and intent for auspicious ordering and status.
  • Optionally perform a brief ācamana and directional salutations (diśo namaskāra) to situate the rite.

The rite

  • Recite the directional movement formulas while physically turning or stepping in the indicated direction (beginning with East as normative emergence).
  • Maintain the narrative cadence: ‘he rose… he went forth following the quarter,’ synchronizing speech with the subject’s controlled movement.
  • Conclude with the Kīrti–Yaśas affirmation as a public-facing seal, declaring the social fruit of correct knowledge and alignment.

When

Preferably at sunrise or in a bright, auspicious time when East is ritually salient; also suitable before public appearance, assembly, or a status-conferring rite.

Frequently Asked Questions

It ritually authorizes a figure’s movement by aligning him with the Directions—especially the East—so that transition and mobility become auspicious, ordered, and socially recognized.

In Vedic ritual space the East is the quarter of beginnings and rightful emergence; moving “following the East” symbolizes correct orientation, legitimacy, and the start of sanctioned progress.

It states that correct knowledge and performance bring visible social results: fame (kīrti) and glory (yaśas) ‘go before’ the person—meaning they gain precedence, good reputation, and public acknowledgement.
