Inside Sukta 102

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is hailed as the divine giver who installs vast vitality in the worshipper, the youthful seer and lord of the inner house.

  2. Development

Praise expands into Agni’s power and efficacy: he is celebrated as strong and victorious, guiding like Mitra and repelling hostile, disordering forces.

  3. Climax

Agni is envisioned at peak potency—forceful, winning, and norm-establishing—actively setting humans on the right path and safeguarding the sacrificer.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves inwardly: the mortal kindles Agni with mind and awakens dhī (thought-power), seeking Agni through radiant energies and returning to luminous order.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the divine Fire—kavi (seer-poet), gṛhapati (lord of the house), messenger of the gods, and the bright power kindled by humans. He is praised for giving bṛhad vayaḥ (vast life-force), for strength (śuṣma), and for driving away hostile forces while establishing right order.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between human and divine realms: he carries offerings to the gods, purifies and transforms substances, and maintains the sacrificial order that sustains ṛta (cosmic harmony).
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and illuminating intelligence within: when kindled “with the mind,” Agni becomes the inner flame that clarifies thought (dhī), energizes aspiration, and guides one toward truth and right action.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn is addressed primarily to Agni, the Vedic Fire, praised as the youthful “lord of the house” and the divine power that carries offerings and protects the worshipper.

It teaches that Agni gives expansive life-force and protection, removes hostile disorder, and should be kindled both outwardly in ritual fire and inwardly through focused mind and awakened thought (dhī).

It can be used during fire-lighting or lamp-lighting with a clear intention: invoke Agni for clarity, strength, and right guidance, and treat the act of kindling as an inner awakening of disciplined will and luminous understanding.
