Devata

Indra

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (likely; common in Indra-vṛtra hymns)

Inside Sukta 15

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The seer announces he will proclaim the great, true deeds of the Great One—Indra’s mighty acts grounded in truth (satya/ṛta).

  2. Development

Indra’s power is shown as Soma-born ecstasy translated into cosmic action: he breaks obstruction, redirects rivers/forces, and overcomes impediments with swift, cutting strength.

  3. Climax

The decisive Vṛtra/Ahi-slaying moment—Indra, after drinking Soma, smites the serpent and turns the locked energies into free-flowing life and victory.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn turns to present benefit: may generosity (dakṣiṇā) be abundant, may our share not diminish, and may we speak with vast inspired power in the assembly, rich in heroic strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

It celebrates Indra’s greatest victory: after drinking Soma he smashes the serpent of obstruction (Vṛtra/Ahi) and restores the free flow of life—waters, light, and strength—then is asked to grant the same help to the singers.

Soma is the ritual drink that empowers Indra’s heroic action, and “trikadruka” points to the structured Soma-setting/pressing stations where Indra is invited to drink and become active for the sacrifice.

It asks that generosity (dakṣiṇā) be abundant for the singer and patron, that the community’s rightful share not be reduced, and that the worshippers speak inspired, ‘vast’ words in the ritual assembly with heroic prosperity.
