Soma Pavamāna

Inside Sukta 40

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is pictured in motion—purifying himself and striding against every assault, while inspired thoughts adorn the inner seer-force.

  2. Development

Petitions arise for dyumna (radiant achievements) and for thousandfold nourishing impulses (iṣaḥ) that sustain growth and ascent.

  3. Climax

The hymn concentrates its boon: Soma is asked to bring “dvibarhasaṃ rayim,” abundance with double support—outer prosperity and inner steadiness.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by seeking ukthya power: strength for the recitable inspired word, sealing the rite with purified speech and fortified life-force.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is celebrated as the self-purifying draught that runs through the filter, shining, wide-ranging (vicarṣaṇi), and victorious over assaults (mṛdhaḥ). He is invoked to bring dyumna (radiant powers), iṣ (nourishing impetus), and rayi (abundance), and to strengthen the hymn/utterance (ukthya).
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between earth and heaven as an energizing, illuminating essence: pressed from the plant, purified through the sieve, offered to the gods, and returning as strength, fertility, and inspired speech.
  • Inner significanceSoma Pavamāna symbolizes the purification of consciousness—raw vitality refined into clarity, courage, and truth-bearing inspiration; the ‘seer-force’ (vipra) is polished by dhīti (illumined thought) until it can carry the true word.
