Rishi

Unknown/uncertain.

Devata

Agni (as Hotṛ).

Chandas

Likely Anuṣṭubh (requires verification).

Inside Sukta 75

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is summoned and ‘yoked’ like a charioteer, then asked to sit as the ancient Hotṛ in the seat of the rite (installation of the priest-fire).

  2. Development

From liturgical establishment, the hymn turns to practical human need: safety and steadiness amid conflict, with vivid imagery of enemies surrounding and danger striking like a wave on a boat.

  3. Climax

The protective plea intensifies—do not let the crushing assault of the haters strike us down (the hymn’s emotional peak).

  4. Where it settles

A return to trust and intimacy: Agni’s help is known from of old like a father’s support; therefore his gracious favor is sought now.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the divine Fire—kindled on the altar, bright-tongued, and ‘god-summoned’ (devahūta), who sits in the sacred seat and recites/invokes on behalf of humans. He is addressed as ancient (pūrvyá), skilled like a charioteer, and as a protector whose favor is sought like that of a father.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between worlds: he conveys offerings to the gods, brings the gods to the sacrifice, and maintains ṛta (cosmic order) through the properly performed rite.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and luminous intelligence within: the inner priest that ‘takes its seat’ in consciousness, transforms raw impulses into offering, and gives courage and protection amid conflict and negativity.

  • Attribution of RV 8.75 is uncertain; no secure additional hymns can be assigned to a single named rishi on the basis of this sukta alone.
  • Mandala 8 contains many hymns with mixed or uncertain attributions in parts of the tradition; this sukta is often treated within that broader, less-stable attribution layer.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the vedi (altar/seat) and ritual space; establish purity and intent.
  • Kindle and strengthen Agni; invite him as devahūta and ‘seat’ him as Hotṛ in the sadas (ritual seat/assembly).
  • Recite the hymn as an āvāhana (invitation) and niṣadana (enthronement/seating) of Agni in the rite.
  • Make oblations while maintaining the protective intention: ask that surrounding hatred and crushing assault not strike the sacrificer.
  • Conclude with a request for Agni’s sumná (gracious favor), reaffirming trust based on long-known help.

Offerings

  • Ghṛta (clarified butter)
  • Samidh (fuel sticks)

Frequently Asked Questions

It invites and installs Agni as the Hotṛ (the invoking priest-fire) in the sacrifice, and asks him to protect the worshippers from hostile forces while granting his favor.

Hotṛ is the priest who calls the gods to the rite. Agni is praised as that divine priest—seated in the ritual place—who carries offerings and makes the invocation effective.

It compares the attack of surrounding enemies or hatred to a wave that can smash a boat—an urgent prayer that such pressure should not overwhelm the sacrificer and community.
