Inside Sukta 84

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct ritual invitation: Indra and Varuṇa are turned toward the sacrifice with offerings and homage, while the ghee-bright impulse moves to meet them.

  2. Development

The poet stresses efficacy—sacrifice and mantric speech are ‘made beautiful’ and ‘made effective’ in the assemblies, praised among the illumined.

  3. Climax

A strong petition for devajūta rayi (god-driven wealth) and for coveted protections that carry the worshippers beyond danger and limitation.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with assurance that the song has reached the deities, requesting enduring svasti and protection for children, descendants, and the whole community.

The deity: Indra–Varuṇa

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as the victorious wielder of power who breaks obstacles and releases abundance; Varuṇa is praised as the sovereign upholder of ṛta, binding and releasing through his moral-cosmic authority. Together they are addressed as “two kings,” approached with oblations, ghee, and homage, asked to grant protection, passage beyond dangers, and wealth guided by the gods.
  • Cosmic functionTheir pairing integrates force and order: Indra’s dynamic victory and release of life-giving goods with Varuṇa’s governance of law, truth, and the right course of the sacrifice and world.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents decisive energy, courage, and breakthrough; Varuṇa represents conscience, restraint, truth, and alignment with right order. Invoked together, they symbolize power disciplined by ethics—effective action guided by inner law.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha (Vasiṣṭha-gotra; one of the principal seer-families of the Rigveda, prominent in Mandala 7) · A foremost ṛṣi and brahmán-priestly poet of the Rigveda, celebrated for powerful sacrificial speech (brahman) and for hymns that unite ritual precision with ethical-cosmic order (ṛta).
