Sukta 5.44

Devata

Agni (probable, based on barhiṣad, svàr-vid, and milking by hymn; hymn 5.44 is classically Agni-oriented in many traditions)

Inside Sukta 44

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is invoked in the ancient, first, and universal manner—seated on the barhis and known as the revealer of the sun-worlds (svar).

  2. Development

The hymn portrays Agni as responsive and near—turned toward the worshiper—strengthened by inspired words, guiding along paths of increase and rightness; his sign outshines deceptive forces and establishes sufficiency.

  3. Climax

The decisive proclamation: “Agni has awakened,” drawing Ṛk and Sāman toward him and receiving Soma’s declaration of friendship—Agni becomes the living center of the whole sacrificial speech-world.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into assurance of companionship and stable dwelling (nyokāḥ) with Agni—ritual and inner life aligned through his awakened presence.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the house-born fire and the sacrificial priest (hotṛ), seated on the sacred grass (barhiṣad), swift and victorious, a revealer who “finds the svar” (sun-world/light). He is invoked in the oldest ways yet is ever-new, kindled by hymns and approached by the meters and chants.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods, carrier of offerings, kindler of dawn-like illumination, and guardian who dispels darkness, deceit, and hostile powers.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened flame of consciousness—discernment that turns toward the seeker, is nourished by truthful speech, and makes the inner offering effective; the power that transforms intention into clarity and right action.

The seer

  • Atri Bhauma (Atri of the Earthly line)Ātreya (Atri-gotra) · Foremost among the Ātreyas; a major Rigvedic seer whose hymns emphasize Agni’s priestly awakening, protection, and the unifying power of mantra and sacrifice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Agni is the main deity. The hymn describes him as seated on the sacred grass (barhis), a revealer of light (svar), and the awakened center of the sacrifice.

It means the seer draws out Agni’s power by praise and mantra—just as milk is drawn from a cow. Speech, when truthful and well-formed, is treated as a real ritual force that nourishes the fire.

It signals that Agni is fully kindled and present—ready to carry offerings and bring clarity. It also means the whole Vedic expression (Ṛk, Sāman, and Soma) gathers around him as a living, friendly power.
