This six-verse Triṣṭubh hymn invokes Soma-empowered Indra, praising the surge of exhilaration (mada) that makes him the “thousand-winning” champion and asking him to renew victorious power for the worshippers. It recalls Indra’s mythic rescues—recovering the Sun/light, striking Śuṣṇa, and aiding Kútsa—so that the same decisive force may break present obstacles and grant strength, gain, and swift gifts.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Indra of the tawny steeds, the great exhilaration has been drunk by thee, as from a brimming vessel. For thee, the Bull, this pressing—strong and victorious—becomes the thousand-winning force, the Soma-impulse that multiplies power for the inner conquest.

Mantra 2

May thy rapturous, bull-like divine ecstasy come to us—worthy to be chosen. O Indra, strong for the effort, winner of gains, smiter of hostile battles, deathless Power: enter our field and make the victory of the soul secure.

Mantra 3

For thou art the hero, the winner, who drives forward the human chariot. Strong in thy might, thou burnest away the lawless Dasyu, like a vessel with flame—purifying the instrument so the journey of the soul can advance.

Mantra 4

O seer, steal back the Sun; seize the wheel by thy mastery and power. Bear the blow against Śuṣṇa; carry Kútsa with the steeds of Vāta—let the swift divine energies restore the lost light and strike the hoarder of illumination.

Mantra 5

For thy ecstasy is the most full of might, and thy will the most full of luminous power. O slayer of Vṛtra, knower of the wide path, become in us the best thinker and the best winner of energies—so the right wideness may be found.

Mantra 6

As thou wast to the former singers, O Indra—like refreshing waters that do not fail the thirst—so I call thee with this sacred formulation. May we know and obtain the impulsion and the victorious field, and thee, the giver who is swift in bestowal.
