Mantra 4

Mantra 7

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Inside Sukta 141

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni’s splendour is established as a visible form—divine radiance born of strength—while the aspirant thought approaches to be led by ṛta’s ‘streaming cows’.

  2. Development

Agni is portrayed in dynamic motion: wind-driven, swift like a steed, unaging in essence, opening firm tracks across the atmospheric spaces and guiding the seer-force through obscurity.

  3. Climax

The hymn reaches its peak in the image of Agni’s purified birth and powerful stride through darkness, revealing him as the one who makes passage possible and renders the rite effective.

  4. Where it settles

Agni is praised with forceful hymns for wider sovereignty; the community and its patrons pray to extend beyond obstruction, like the Sun surpassing mist.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the luminous, manifest deity—flame as god—born from power, kindled by breath/wind, and praised as the priestly mediator whose radiance is seen and whose motion opens the ways.
  • Cosmic functionHe links heaven and earth by carrying offerings to the gods, establishes and safeguards ṛta, and opens the ‘tracks’ (paths) through the midspace so that divine order, prosperity, and insight can move toward the sacrificer.
  • Inner significanceAgni signifies awakened will and aspiration (tapas), the clarifying intelligence that makes thought effective, and the inner fire that converts obscurity into discernment while guiding the seeker along the right path.

The seer

  • Dīrghatamas ĀucathyaĀucathya (connected in tradition with the Aṅgiras milieu; specific gotra varies by recension and later lists) · A visionary poet-seer famed for enigmatic, symbolic hymns on ṛta, light, speech, and cosmic order; traditionally associated with profound riddling imagery and contemplative depth.
